Chithiram Pesudhadi was one movie that I really liked, including the climax. Now after watching the movie ‘Anjaadhey’ I think I will not miss any of the movies directed by Mysskin. Anjaadhey is a great movie.

The plot maybe quite predictable, but the treatment is refreshingly new. When someone becomes a police officer, what do we expect in movies? Straight away he gets into that blue jeep, with rayban glass entering the red bricked building called as Police Station. Not in this movie atleast. The police station in this movie is exactly how it is in real life. And when the newly appointed police officer enters the police station the only person who shows any interest in him is the tea kadai payyan with his one word ‘Pudhusa?’. This guy still pesters the writer and asks ‘Sir naan enga sir ukkarananum? for which the writer answers ‘Chair la dhaan’. Ha ha. Nice Induction program.

There are quite a few interesting scenes like a kid trying to get to his dad, with two men trying to hold him or the florist lady doing her bit, but the best thing I liked in this movie was the assembling of small pieces. Initially it shows the irresponsible young man, followed by family sentiments and before we even realize its moved into thriller mode. And there is no looking back. None of the segments are repetitive except for the songs. Maybe they are a reminder to us that we are watching a movie and not an intense drama.

I didnt like the songs, but I somehow wonder if the director deliberately placed the bad songs in between to reiterate his point that ‘Chithiram Pesudhadi’ is a good movie even if there was no ‘vaazha meenukkum’ song. The climax might have been handled better. I didnt expect the knuckle sound during the climax, from otherwise such a wonderfully made subtle movie. But then its ok. Other parts are too good to let these minor shortcomings spoil the overall experience.

Casting is nice and it was nice to see Prasanna in a new role, except for his hair style. Naren, Balaji, heroine(whats her name?), Pandiarajan, Livingston, Sappai(That fisherman) and others have shown some restraint and acted really well. Very good!

Today evening while watching Thalaivars Vettayadu VeLayadu I observed this.

Actual Movie Duration – 2 hrs 37 minutes
Movie Duration in Sun TV -4 hrs 9 minutes
Advertisements – 40 minutes.
News* – 42 minutes

Movie was between 6.03-6.17, 6.24-6.41, 6.48-7.05, 7.11-7.26, 8.00-8.18, 8.25-8.40, 8.46-9.06, 9.13-9.26, 9.32 to 9.43, 9.49-10.02 and 10.08-10.12

Advertisements were between 6.18-6.23, 6.42-6.47,7.06-7.10,8.19-8.24,8.41-8.45,9.07-9.12,9.27-9.31,9.44-9.48,10.03-10.07

On an average, an advertisement lasted 20 seconds. So totally, we had to endure close to 144 advertisements (Not different advertisements)

The advertisement break can be split into two parts

1. Generic advertisements
2. Adverstiments of sponsors, who sponsored for the movie telecast. E.g. Castrol.

So, on every advertisment break you get to watch general advertisement for first 2 minutes and then the advertisements of the sponsors. Finally, just 1 minute before movie resumes Castrol Active’s ad was shown, followed by other advertisements for a minute.

Every time the movie resumes, it starts some 10 seconds before when it actually stopped. Continuity?

*-I didnt calculate the actual news duration and the advertisment duration during the news break. All times in P.M., IST.

Orkut is acting Ramadoss. Sorry, acting crazy. I get notifications that someone has scrapped, but there is no scrap. Silly orkut.

Yesterday I was watching this movie ‘Chathriyan’. Its a moive starring two of my favorites ‘Captain’ and Banupriya. But this movie got released before Captain became Gaptun. So there is no fun. On the contrary, it is a treat for all Banupriya fans. Do you like the song ‘maalayil Yaaro manadhoadu pesa’? It is one of my alltime favorites.

The best thing I like in this song is that, there is only Banupriya. For instance, according to the movie she dreams about Vijayakanth. But not in a single frame of this song, we get to see Vijayakanth or any other group dancers. It is Banupriya and only Banupriya. I dont remember seeing many such dream songs.

Next, the location of the song. Is it in India? If yes, where? Or by any chance Thailand?
Finally, do you associate your favorite Hero/Heroines with a song or scene? Whenever someone mentions Banupriya the first thing that comes to my mind is this song.

So, there you go. Orkut, Banupriya and Association!

Update: I was chatting with my friend, Nochu Nagamma, and she asked me about Visu, Nagesh, Revathi, Jothika and Aamir Khan!

Visu – Kudumbam oru kadhambam and Samsaram adhu Minsaram
Nagesh – Server Sundaram
Revathi – mouna Ragam
Jothika – Oh sona -Vaali
Aamir Khan – Pehla Nasha, JJWS

Whats in your list?

Thoovanam is a movie which does not have any item number, separate comedy track, fight sequences or punch dialogues. What starts off as yet another love story, surprised me in the second half. Actually I am finding it quite tough to review the movie without revealing the plot. It is not a suspense movie, but the second half and climax is something that I least expected. These are my views.

1. The story line and screenplay. Not to take away any credit from Aaditya or Nethra, but this movie would have worked if there had been any hero or heroine. That shows how much weightage the script has over the movie.
2. Believable. The movie is very believable and realistic. How many people in real life can forego their ego? Is love bigger or ego bigger?
3. Picturisation of songs. Especially ‘Ededho Maatramadi’. And the Thoovanam title track that has been used all through the movie.
4. Casting. Some people had commented earlier about Aditya and is he good enough to be a hero. He suits the role perfectly. Actually he is not a hero. He is the lead character, and we get to know what happens in his life. He is not a CBI officer under the disguise of a road side romeo, nor is he a punch dialogue paramasivam. Girls dont run after him, he doesn’t beat 5 people in mid air. He is just anybody. He has really lived that role. Not to forget about Nethra, who has done a wonderful job. Especially with her eyes
5. Cinematography by Madhu Ambaat
6. Subtle things, like change in body language, all through the movie. For instance I was surprised at Aditya’s portrayal of emotions in the second half. Suddenly you realise why is he doing, what he is doing. Once you think back, right from the end of first half you realise that the signs were all there. Nice Hats off to the director.
7. Length of the movie. Just right. Less than 2.5 hours
8. Climax.

Some things I felt could have been better

1. I didn’t find Banuchandar’s role interesting
2. A bit slow first half. Maybe that was deliberate, to make the second half more dramatic?
3. Make up. Especially for Aditya. The moustache didn’t suit him and one can easily make out that it was artificial.
4. The title card. It was nice and interesting till Karthik keeps talking. But all of a sudden it switches to the film roll kind of thing. It was bit distracting.
5. Certain places I felt dialogues could have been more powerful.

Having said that, I feel it is a good movie which must be encouraged. We(Atleast I) look forward to movies that surprise the viewer, and does not take them for granted. I really enjoyed watching the movie, and hope directors Haricharan and Newton come up with many more movies like this.

By the way I never knew one can review(with spoilers) the movie by just watching the poster and trailers, like what this guy has done. This movie is being featured in Jaya TV on thursday, and in Madan’s thiraiparvai on Sunday. Check it out.
