Azhagiya Thamizh Magan features Vijay and Shriya Saran. The movie is produced by Appachan and directed by Bharathan. AR Rahman has composed the music, with Vaali, Na.Muthukumar, Thamarai and Pa.Vijay penning the lyrics.
There are totally 6 songs in this album, including a remix of yesteryear hit ‘ponmagaL vandhaaL’. One thing that struck me when I saw the track listing, was the number of new singers ARR has used in this album. Luckily, all of them sound like Tamilians (Pronounciation is good).
Ella Pugazhum – Singer: A.R.Rahman, Lyrics: Vaali 5.31
This is the title song. I was initially surprised when I knew that ARR was singing the title track. It is usually Shankar Mahadevan, for Vijay, right? Vaali’s lyrics must please Vijay fans a lot with lines like
‘hey thozhaa munaal vaada unnal mudiyum thala thala thaLabadhi nee dhaan. anbu thalaiva vetri namakke. azhagiya thamizh magan nee dhaane’.
I somehow get a feeling that this song will be used as BGM in the movie. Good peppy song. Especially the high pitch burst from ARR at the end ‘mudyiyaadhu enbadhe illai. kadal poal malai poal bhoomi poal neeyum perumai serada’.
ponmagaL vandhaaL – Singers: Aslam, ember rap Lyrics: alangudi somu 3.05
Wonderful song. I was least expecting a remix song to be like this. Especially the end of first line. You kind of settle into the tune with Aslam singing ‘ennai aaLakkinaal anbile’, and you have techno beats followed by the ember rap ‘You are my diamond girl, smiling smiling girl’. Its like a shaggy song. Its funny when the singer sings tamil lyrics in rap tone. I liked it in the first hearing itself. Far better than the ‘Thottal poo malarum’ remix.
Nee Marilyn Monroe – Singers: Benny Dayal, Ujjayinee Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar 6.14When I heard the samples from ARR’s website, this was my least favorite song. But the full song changed my view completely. If you thought ‘Style’ song from Sivaji was stylish, wait till you listen to this
Ujjayinee(Listen to the way she goes oh oh somewhere around 4.10) and Benny Dayal have sung very well. The interludes of this song are quite exciting, and the whole sang has rhythmic beats at the background. Foot tapping no. Since this song is picturised on Namitha, guess one can skip the video
vaLayapatti – Singers: Naresh Iyer, Ujjayinee, Madhumitha Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar 5.44
‘Nee nadhaswaram pola vandhaal naabi kamalam naana. Nee ezhu swaram pola vandhaal etta swaram naana, etta swaram naana’. Easily my favorite of the album. Naresh Iyer has kalaasified as usual. Listen to the way he croons ‘Jimikki poatta mayile mayile, mayakkuriye ennai mayakkuriye’. Na.Muthukumar has done a wonderful job with the lyrics. I am becoming a huge fan of this guy. If someone just looks at the lyrics of the song, they might anticipate a traditional tamil song with nadhaswaram, thavil and other instruments. And the trailer samples also conveyed the same. But the full version took me by surprise. Its a fusion of various classical styles(carnatic, hindustani, Qawwali), with modern beats, brazilian samba and many more. The voices of Ujjayinee and Madhumitha go along very well with the song. ‘Un kaNgal reNdum kalyani, un sirippo sindhu bhairavi, nee konjum boadhu neelambari’. ‘nee paarkum boadhe pathikudhe sondha ooru sivakasiya pesum boadhe sillunudhe unga oorum cherrapunjiya nee nerungum boadhe current erudhe unga ooru kalpaakkama narambellam muRukkerudhe yaendi neeyum manapaariya.’ Too good!
kaeLaamal kaiyile – Singers: Sriram Parthasarathy, Saindhavi Lyrics : Thamaarai 5.27
The beginning of the song reminded me of ‘aagaya vennilave tharai meedhu vandhadheno’ from the movie Arangetra veLai, but the similarity ends there. I somehow feel that lyrics could have been better, for this tune. The mood of the song is somewhat like the maaricham song from ‘Sillunu oru kaadhal’. Whats this genre called? Haunting genre?
Guess I need to listen some more times to like it.
Madhuraikku Pogadhadi – Singers: Benny Dayal, Archith, Dharshanaa Lyrics: Pa. Vijay 5.23
Foot tapping song, with funny lyrics. ‘Madhuraikku pogadhadi enga mallipoo kaN vaikkum, thanjavur pogadhadi thalai aatama bommai nikkum, thoothukudi pona sila kappal tharai thattum’. Another song, which I might like after repeated hearing. Some parts of the song reminds me of an old tamil song ‘maNamagaLe maRumagaLe vaa vaa, un valadhu kaalai eduthu vaithu vaa vaa’ (Not very sure about the lyrics).
As always, Boss delivers. Benny Dayal and Ujjayinee are very good, and I look forward to more songs with ARR/Na.Muthukumar combination
I like it more than Sivaji.

Kelaamal and Maduraikku Pogathadi are too good. Just listen to them twice more
Bingo abt Na. Muthukumar. He is lot better than others in the current crop.
The new comers have done a wonderful job…Also except for intro song others doesnt indicate this album as Vijay’s film…And yes ‘Ponmagal Vandhaal’ is too good.
prabhu…. somehow i feel, u went a little too far when u said marlyn menroe is better than Style and toooo far when u said ponmagal vanthaal is better than thotttal poo malarum re-tune
i personally feel, rahman will not do any re-mix stuff..particularly using the original tune…. i still believe it is some one who did that re-mix….
ATM is really good album….really good for a Vijay album.. better than Varalaru… but time shud say if it is better than SOK or Sivaji
The Aagaya Vennilavae connection is not so obvious. Nice catch!
Don’t you think there is a strong Kummi Adi hangover in Valayapatti?
Yes, it is great to see ARR still introducing new talents, though he introduces many, he nurtures only one or two like a Naresh iyer or a Madhusree… let us see how often we can listen to these new voices… one voice i thought ARR should have used more is ‘Mukesh’ who sang ‘Theekuruviyai’ in Kangala Kaithi Sei…. I too like the soundtrack but still i am not completely into ‘Kelaamal’ song… hope it will grow on me…
my thoughts

Luckily AR Rehman avoided the great voice of Vijay!!!
Prabhu,
Am not a gr8 fan of remixes, that too by Rahman. But i always felt that Thottal Poo Malarum was one too good of a number. Probably if MGR had heard this song, am sure he would have been definitely pleased. Rahman songs will keep growing inside you steadily. I heard many say that they did not like Athiradee in the first instance. But see the result now. This album is gonna be a phenomenal success.
Where’s TK Karthik these days? Even ARR has stopped using him? An awesome talent, feel sad that he doesnt have too many takers now.
Looks like I am the odd man out. I simply didnt like “Ella pugazum” at all – donno why. My favourites are ponmagal and marlyn manroe. The rest are hummable stuff but nothing extra ordinary.
Regards… Vijay.
ONLY ONE WORD MIND BLOWING USUAL RAHMAN STUFF
You are spot on with Aagaya Venillave connection. I felt exactly the same way when I heard the sample.. probably same raaga or something?
FYI – Ponmagal vanthal remix is done by Krishna Chetan and not by Rahman. Now tell me is it better than
Thootal poo malarum
I found both the intro and the remix to be poor. I thought I was in a minority of one till I saw Vijay Ganesh’s comment above. Maybe Vijay is the connection.
The other songs are good. My pick would be “Nee Marilyn Monroe”, with “Kelaamal Kaiyile” coming a close second.
Ella pugzhalum – sumaar except for the starting
ponmagal is superb
marilyn manroe – i dont like it at all. For me still, style is lot times better than this.
kelaamal kaiyile – is good
maduraikku – pretty ordinary.
ATM is good but not as good as SIVAJI
Thotaal poo malarum is a class apart… considering he entirely changed the tune for Thottal, the ponmagal song is very very ordinary. Though the rap part of the song stands out. Am surprised you would give it so much credit in relation to his earlier remix.
Marlyn Manroe has been sung stylishly by Benny and the lyric is really catchy… A breeze ahead of the substandard English pronunciations that we have been used to in other songs by other singers… Otherwise I personally feel Style from Sivaji is a class apart.
Rahman hangover continues…ATM goes along with Godfather.
Valayapatti song is a jugal bandhi where various instruments are used.Actually ARR, sivamani ,zakir hussain and so many artist used to play in olden times.
this is an awesome song i have ever heard……… this song rokzzzzzz……. ARR is awesome….. he rokzz….
Though we can’t expect much from Rahman for a Vijay starrer masala, Something’s lacking in this album, may be the balance of Mass and Class.

FY1 prabhu Benny has already sung a couple of songs in sivi….hes become one of my fav singers. Surprisingly hiis tamil is good…naresh iyer needs to take lessons frm this guy.
ella pugazhum is alrite
marlyn monroe is awesome
kelamal is also good
dint like maduraikku or valayapatti coz valayapatti is pronounced wrong and its my native!!
of course ponmagal vanthal doesn’t sound like ARR’s product…too mediocre but i liked the singer aslam
Very nice music review.
I liked all the songs from ‘Azhagiya Thamizh Magan’. My favorite song on the album would have to be ‘Valayapatti’, which is sung by Naresh Iyer, Ujjayinee and Madhumita. It has an interesting application of classical music accompanied by a traditional set of instruments. The song starts off with the female singer crooning and then Naresh Iyer takes over. A R Rahman has done a terrific job.
Jothi
also hear this of A R Rahman tune for karen david
ARR has composed 2 songs for this album.
- “Shillong Shillong”
- “Carry Me Home” [See official website to hear 30 second song clips

I really liked ur post, thanks for sharing. Keep writing. I discovered a good site for bloggers check out this http://www.blogadda.com, you can submit your blog there, you can get more auidence.
Benny Dayal sounds like a boyish version of Adnan Sami in certain places. Ujjayini is one treasure pot!! Its ofc inappropriate to compare.
And the juggling of raagas in Valayapatti’s charanams is brilliant ! Especially when Naresh Iyer sings “…nee konjum podhu neelambari..”
Naresh Iyer is all set to give Shankar Mahadevan a run for his money with these genre of songs.
I listened to all songs but tunes seem to be not typical of ARR.something new but makes us blink if it is really from ARR.we may have to get used to these tunes to like it much unlike any other ARR, all Harris tunes whom we like it like it much on hearing twice.
Oneday mattum Girlfriednga varya?
Saturday night partyku pogalam variya…. ha thats my favorite monre song
lol@Gandhi’s girlfriend aa variyaa post
)
I felt only 2 songs live upto ARR’s product – Marlyn & Kaelaamal.
Prabhu,
Kaelaamal – I think falls under “House Music” – a club music sort of BGM running as a separate track along with vocals which is released from all speakers. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Everybody has said enuf abt the music quality . Here let me tell u that tamil lyric writters shud widen their horizons . In the name of trying to be very catchy and well informed they come out with englih words which is good by itself but in the process they cannot reveal their ignorance . for eg the following lyrics of the song Nee marlyn maroe …..
we find this line
MissWold polengum Mr.World kedayathu
It is a mockery since only few years back an indian won the title of Mr world contest . This has got nothing to do with body buliding contest , this is called mr world contest.
It is quite surprising that the director , nor the music director gave any imprtance to the real meaning of words .
Mrylin song of Namitha n Vijay stands on 1st number rest are all waste Knowing ARR his tunes grow slowly into the crowd Now lets see if this time it works If not rest all songs are pathetic.
did anyboy asked for your review. you are complete waste
GUYS plz gimme a foto of uJJayini..

incase you donno already, ujjayinee of marlyn monroe fame was a participant of Arr show – ooh la la la in Sun TV – the group went out in Semis (ofcourse she started singing even before that for Arr) – you can see the video of the episode here – the first group is hers (OM – she is the lead singer)

In marlyn monroe, Benny Dayal is jus gr888….the tempo, the pronunciation style…he is the exact talent pot!!!
on the contrary am jus surprised to see people praising ujjainee…… she seems a total wastrel to me…. am sure people who’ve listened to other better voices would agree with me….. she is just ARTIFICIAL !! n to jus hear the way she goes oh oh at the start!! i felt like dying … she is the one who spoiled an otherwise awesome song!!!
i luv all da songs!! ARR is simply awsum! =)
ponmagal song is very very superb i hope krishna chetan is become music director ARR is superb
I m a BIG BIG BIG fan of naresh iyer…
He always puts his soul into every song he sings..no wonder he got d national award for Roobaroo
anyway..as usual..he is at his best in Valayapatti..
Bout d kummi adi hangover..wel look at d tune..both d ongs resemble a bit..tats y..
Ponmagal vandaal is too gud..i think its much better dan thottal poo malarum..it drags on a bit..whereas ponmagal is jus rite..superb actually..
