Nothing wrong with doing a promo, .. Jus that it cannot qualify to be a review…

A reviewer can appreciate a movie for the art and technique.. But, once you have admitted that this is a promotional effort, your appreciation doesn’t carry the weight that a reviewer’s does. Makes the word review a sham.

Besides the spoiler alert, this piece also needs a disclaimer for the bias thrown in..

Thanks for your comment. Agree. Yes, I am trying to promote Thoovanam. I don’t think there is any need for me to hide the fact that am promoting the movie

And I just mentioned in one paragraph about the mindless movies. There are many factors which I really liked in the movie and have mentioned that. Maybe if you watch the movie you might agree

Why have you been trying to promote Thoovanam? From audio review to preview, and now review. Is someone connected to the film close to you?

And by the way, though I haven’t seen the film, your review kind of belies your desperation to say something nice about the movie. A good (or rather an ideal) review is one that talks of the film for what it is, and in general does not compare it with other movies of different genre.

You have brought in the idea of mindless movies here, and that is a more than a giveaway. Just because this movie is not an all-out (idiotic) masala, it should not be showered with adjectives. Praise for a movie should be for what it is and not for what it is not.

Most reviewers make this mistake. Mozhi was a classic example (I saw the movie and liked it immensely). But the point is, the reviews were almost panegyric simply because it came across as being clean and straight (implicit in the reviews was a strong statement on (against) the kind of movies that otherwise obtain in Tamil these days). Mozhi’s strength was its evolved and breezy humour rather than it being clean.

Thoovanam may or may not be a good movie. But your review is straining for effect, which, needless to say, spoils whatever case you are trying to build for it.
