Dear NN,
I recently maamanared. The wedding went on very well except for one thing. My son in law refused for janavasam. I am sad about it. Dont know what to do now, since the wedding got over. Is there some way to force son in law to do this janvasam? I have one more daughter in the pipeline. I mean, pipeline for getting married.
Maaman.R, Chennai.
Dear Maaman.R,
These days no one is interested in going for this Janavasam drive and all. The main intention of Janavasam was those days people lived in villages, and they wanted to show everyone their son in law. Nowadays you have photographic and videographic proof of the same. So be happy that your son in law has saved some money for you. Still I have a solution. During peak Diwali season take your son in law and daughter for a drive. Tell them you want to go for a long drive. But ensure your daughter knows about it in advance, so that she doesn’t make any plans on her own. Then take your unsuspecting son in law around panagal park at around 6.30 pm. Triple the no of people who attended the wedding will see your son in law. Oh yeah. Try to do something so that your car back seat light is always on. Yes it is not equivalent of a janvasam, without garland and open car. But under the circumstances this is the best I can suggest. In fact, if you drive even slower you might to get hear ’saavukraaki. Janvasa car aa oattara.’

Prabhu,
an interesting tidbit of info for you..
the idea behind Janavasam in those days was not to show your son-in-law to everyone..
as per my grandpa…
in those days the boys and girls were always married to people in their local villages.
it was also customary for people to marry or engage weddings when the boy and girl were sitll 8-13 years old. that said, the Janavasam was a procession of the boy in an open cart through every street in the boy’s village so that the girls parents could find out if the boy was already married or promised to some other girl. the idea behind all the fan fare was to ensure everyone came out of their house and took a look at the boy and gave him the nod..
this was our equivalent to “if somone has any objections to this holy union please speak up now or forever hold your peace!”, that we see in christian weddings!
