an interesting tidbit of info for you..

the idea behind Janavasam in those days was not to show your son-in-law to everyone..

as per my grandpa…

in those days the boys and girls were always married to people in their local villages.

it was also customary for people to marry or engage weddings when the boy and girl were sitll 8-13 years old. that said, the Janavasam was a procession of the boy in an open cart through every street in the boy’s village so that the girls parents could find out if the boy was already married or promised to some other girl. the idea behind all the fan fare was to ensure everyone came out of their house and took a look at the boy and gave him the nod..

this was our equivalent to “if somone has any objections to this holy union please speak up now or forever hold your peace!”, that we see in christian weddings!
