Shankar wastes a life time opportunity
Are you a Rajni fan? Then you will definitely enjoy Sivaji. His mannerisms, style, dialogues etc are really good. So you will really enjoy the movie for Rajni’s style. Especially the cameo in second half. I advise you not to read the review further. Its not worth your time.
Sivaji is a movie where Shankar takes Rajni and Rajni fans for a ride. Fine, Rajni fans dont want any logic and they want to enjoy their Thalaivar’s screen presence. But would they complain if the movie had some story and some logic? I dont think any Rajni fan held a gun on Shankar’s forehead and said ‘I hereby threaten you not to make a movie with logic, sentiment and some good story line’. When thats the case, why on earth does Shankar make such a movie? Forget other movies. Its not good when compared with other Rajni movies, Baba excluded.
Sivaji is like a Airbus A-380. Huge, gigantic, excellent use of technology etc. As in good cast, top class technicians. Super Music. Sexy(Shriya) air hostesses who deliberately drop something in front of you, so that they can bend and expose their body via their low cut dresses. Amazing Pilot(Rajni), with an excellent track record. Good support from Vivek and others. But whats the point? The engine is not that of a A-380. It is of a TVS-50. As a result the movie fails to take off.
Looks like half way through the movie production, Rajni got frustrated and said ‘Shankar. Enough of this nonsense. Can we have some decent story please?’ As a result major portions of the second half is good. This movie is worth watching just for the Mottai Boss sequence. Suman was ok ok. Nothing compared to Neelambari or Baasha Raghuvaran. Villain mela kovam, bayam edhuvume illai.
The build up to Rajni’s character was very weak. If someone had to have some sympathy for Rajni in this movie, for what he goes through then some effort needs to go in portraying the character right? Instead of spending so much time in wooing Shriya, scenes like Rajni and Raghuvaran trying to rescue a small boy could have been used in plenty. That was nice. Thats another reason why I left the movie hall irritated. Shankar does know to make good scenes. Then why is he hell bent on taking scenes like the one in Solomon papayya’s home? Lesser said about the lunch party for Shriyas family, the better.
The songs have been picturised really well. Especially Athiradi. I somehow felt that could have been used as Rajni intro song instead of Ballelaka. BTW was Ballelaka taken somewhere around Mahabaleshwar? That river reminded me of Koyna river. Rajni’s make up is good for major part of the movie. Viveks punch dialogues making fun of idiots like Simbhu is hilarious, and Oru Koodai sunlight song picturisation was too good. Stunt sequences are nice. I liked almost all the fight sequences. And graphics was pretty impressive. Especially the part where the car goes inside king kong’s mouth
I couldn’t hear much of the BGM, as it was the 2nd day and Rajni fans made their presence felt
Rajni was very good and extremely stylish, Shriya beautiful, Raghuvaran wasted, Vivek excellent, AR Rahman brilliant, KV Anand amazing, Thottatharani unbelievable, Anthony sharp, AVM liberal, Shankar uninspiring. If this movie is a definition for entertainment, sorry, I dont want to be entertained. I guess Shankar can stick to producing movies and stop directing. He reminds me of yesteryear T Rajendar. All brahmaandam with no story.

Good review! Already I don’t have much expectation from the movie. It has reduced even more now
>Shankar does know to make good scenes.
yeah this is what is irritating about all his movies. When he is capable of making good scenes, why doesn’t he do it?!
Songs have been picturized well? That’s great!
on 16 Jun 2007 at 8:06 pm # sami
yes. it is only because of rajini, the shivaji ship is sailing. didnt expect this from shankar. for this story, either K.S.Ravikumar or suresh krishna is fine, not shankar.
as u said more scenes like raghuvaran and rajini helping school boy should have included. villain not so powerful. wished raghuvaran made as villain for rajini.
BGM is really great. ARR is multiplying image of Rajini by 100 times on screen. style song is too good. i intially feared that rajini’s getup with those funny wigs will succeed or not, but it looked enjoyable.
athiradee is great.
BGM for motta BOSS and when rajini changes his hairstyle from “padikkathavan” to “padayappa” is great. thats the punch scene.
“pazhagalam” scene is dragging. why they want to include solomon pappaya and pattimandram raja. thevaye illa.
Sivaji-la rajini gethu, arr talent, thottatharani, manish malhotra, prabhu deva’s talent, nayan and shriya - all looked fine except for shankar and sujatha.
weak dialogues by sujatha.
shankar had done a repeat of india’s mistake in the worldcup ie…too much carefulness. he cared for each scene but as a whole? brammandam is the only area where i come to know that it is a shankar’s movie.
rajini & arr - australian players in the team is helping a lot

Krishnamurthy saar … sorry to say this - ‘You got it absolutely wrong!’ Your review of the movie is pathetic dude. I watched Sivaji yesterday — it was absolutely FANTASTIC! Chandramukhi was awful — not sure how it became a super HIT. And please don’t compare TR with Shankar — its like comparing your writings with a correspondent from New York times. Please watch the movie one more time — when you haven’t smoked POT.

Hello Anonymous, I read New York Times regularly. I don’t know you put it just for the sake of putting it. It is not great, but I don’t think you can compare it with TR. Let me know if you disagree.

I watched the movie and I liked it. But again, I liked it because of the hype that all Rajini fans created. Like you said, the second half of the movie was much better than the first half… but hey! its at least worth watching once.

on 18 Jun 2007 at 11:01 am # Billa
Every one has some expectations regarding the movie because of the hypes given. May be Ferrari’s expectation went wrong.
But on the whole the movie is entertaining and enjoyable and to the point it had lived to the expectation of the majority audience. Atleast for that i appreicate shankar for slipping from his usual style of movie making.
Imagine if shankar had made a movie of his typical style and if that failed to impress majority audience. Thats it. Totally gone. The reason why i say this is, it had happened with Rajini combination with Bharathiraja, Balumahendra. To an extent in Thalapathy too if we accept honestly.
One thing we should remember, while going to rajini movie, just go for rajini.

Hi Prabhu ,
Please let me know why did you watch sivaji ? .
Bacause of Rajni in that movie or because its a Shankar is the director Or ARR music ?
According to me , Shankar is the director who makes “Senti+society driven problems” as theme and makes money.
I watch movie for entertainment and not for “Social messages” . I feel I will get that from some where else.Hence I like KS than Shankar.
So , I will watch “Sivaji” like a another movie and I will come outof the hall happy , rather than thinking why “NO messages or why no LOGIC ”

Perhaps to expect movies such as a Baasha or a Padayappa is a wasted dream , where every ingredients was just perfect.
….so also, to expect Shankar to move out of his orbit & create something beyond expectations was never going to happen
the movie had pizzaz the first time around, however don’t know if I can enjoy watching it yet again
on 18 Jun 2007 at 4:08 pm # mark iv
hmm… it makes sense prabhu. look at the comments battle… obviously the greater elite of the star-fan brigade have lost their abilities of understanding set of words strung together. i however as the lesser intellectual rajni fan see nothing wrong with the review (prabhu-view??)
anyways, rajni movies are meant to be entertainers. senti+rajni comedy+gethu+lots of hype… shankar movies typically are just about hype+brammabdam (hype)+ high technology (hype)+ expensive sets (hype)+ foreign locales (hype)
since sivaji is a thalaivar movie, shankar’s hype part is cut down to minimum. about the story- we really shouldn’t care, as long as the entertainment is good. which again is extremely easy for rajni as long as he doesn’t pull a baba…
baasha or thalapathy are god sends… not fair to expect them out of every movie.
on 18 Jun 2007 at 5:44 pm # Karthi
Prabhu , I just said we need not watch movies for “social messages” or any expectations…
I never meant that you are watching movies for messages.

At the end of Thiruda Thiruda, one person in the audience told me - What a great movie. SP Muthuraman is incredible.
So I said - What does SPM have do with Thiruda Thiruda ? It is a Mani Ratnam movie.
He was totally shocked. He said, Really ?! Are you sure ??
Then his face became downcast. He said he expected lot more than this from Mani Ratnam. Avar standard yenna, avar range yenna. !!!
That’s the issue here also. Instead of watching it as a regular Rajni padam, you are watching it as a Shankar padam. As a Rajni padam, this is probably one of the best ones. As a Shankar padam, it is not even half decent.
For populist masala movies, I really don’t see the need for a contrarian review like yours or Baddy’s in the first place. This movie practically sold itself. Highest alltime collection, masses enjoyed bigtime. Instead of playing spoilsport, switch off your brain for once and just have fun, will ya. Instead, you have to go and look for logic and story. You know fully well Rajni movie is not really a movie, it is much more like a celebration, festival, variety entertainment event, etc. If you participate in it that way, you’ll have serious fun. I’m looking at SunTV news and cursing myself for not being in Tamil Nadu right now. I would have had so much fun participating in the celebrations, instead of sitting alone in this wretched USA. These are all one-time events. Like Halley’s comet or tsunami. Very very unlikely that this much excitement over a Rajni padam with this combination of Shankar+ARR will happen ever again in history. Ippo poi story logic nu pesindu irunda yeppdi ? Pliss to consider.

Its a typical rajinikanth movie. I think shankar got confused on which way to go, either to please rajini fans or to go in his own way.. But he failed on both.
What is amazing is, rajini still rocks at this age and his action, comedy and dialogue delivery is still ever green.
one should really appreciate it..
But on the other hand, I m dis satisfied with Rajni’s introduction song.. perhaps, the worst ever introduction song than Baba..
Song sequence is also not good.
BGM is not that good and it was better in Chandramukhi and Padayappa.. To me, ARR still lacks BGM. in one fight sequence, he has used the “sooriyanum chandranum” music and athiradeee song..

“All brahmaandam with no story.” Have to take your word for this. But, very few movies actally have a storyline…especially these days where style and technology gimmicks and exotic locatios dominate the narration than the story. Slick is the look people are looking for, are they not?

All those criticising prabhu remember that if you are a true rajini fan, having followed his career from Murutu Kalai (when SP Muthuraman gave Rajini his current image), you will feel sad. Sivaji shows the demise of Superstar and magnifies his flaws. His style doesnt seem like his style, his face does not emote. Rajini has made a fool of himself.
Only those content with watching rajini on screen will like the movie. Even for them, Id suggest watching old rajini movies on screen in rundown theatres.

as gayatri put it, the comments are sure fun… im an Aandavar Kalaignani fan…. and i really do like Rajni.. what i dont like are his fans who have actually let him down in the last decade or so by glorifying even his ridiculous movies and so called ’style’… he’s a guy who’s got stuff… n he’s shown it as well before.. i really wonder if rajni will ever do movies like Bhuvana oru kelvi kuri, Sri Raghavendra, Mundru Mugam, Netrikkan, Mr. Bharath, etc where his style was really woven in the script and created on screen magic… Here’s what I’ve always believed in… Rajni CAN act, his fans DON’T want him to… they have successfully convinced him into resorting to gimmicks instead…
I really want to watch the movie… purely out of curiosity… wish me luck… but these reviews have cleansed by brain to expect 0% logic and 100% magic….. im confident ill come out satisfied….

rajini’s age shows, specially in the song with nayanthara. It is a horrible mixture of indiyan, gentleman & anniyan.
Feels sorry seeing rajini making a fool of himself. It is time he takes on dignified roles which suit his age.
