Dear NN,
I am facing a problem attending close relatives weddings and such functions, at my home town. Everytime I attend such a thing, some relatives and wellwishers come and ask me ‘Naan yaar theriyaradha’, ‘Eppo kalyanam pannika pore’ and other such questions. Worst part is many people ask me such questions. How do I handle these people, and keep saying same thing time and again? Please help!

Dear Girija,
Actually many people who stay away from home face this problem. There is a simple technique which you can use. You might be having quite a few friends. And there would be people with whom you wouldn’t have talked for sometime. So what you can do is send a sms or mail to these friends, and tell them to call you at regular intervals. Like for instance if you are going to be at the wedding hall between 6.30 and 8 P.M. you can askl 5 friends to call at 6.45, 7, 7.15 etc. Nopw when someone is talking to you, the phone will ring. You can act busy and start talking. No one will wait for you to finish the conversation. Later when you meet the same person, you can say ‘Nimmadhiye poachu. Eppo paathalum phone’ and they will say ‘aamaamam. Ippo ellam ellarume ippadi dhaan iruka’. And moreover, you get to talk to your friends for sometime whih otherwise you might not have. One stone two mango. Dont worry about roaming rates, since the Telecom Dept has reduced the roaming charges ![]()

And worst is when you meet them in some wedding, their Q would be when is yours??
An interesting answer someone told me. He/She when met same relative in another relatives death anniversary asked, “so when is yours??”
After that the relative never asked such a Q in a wedding..

nice suggestion. another thing she can do is ask them a question… “eppo neenga unga husband-ai divorce panna poreenga? avarukkaaga naan kaathirukiren” or “ungalukkaaga naan waiting maamoi, seekiram unga wife-ai divorce pannunga”.,

sometimes I feel its better to invite our neighborhood isthri karan and paalkaari than these “ennai theriyutha” distant aunties and uncles… Maybe I can try that in my wedding

For the question?
Ennai theriyardha?
You can just answer “Ivlo pakathula nikkaringa theriama irukumaa?”
They will be amused and wont irritate u anymore.Just they will walk off saying “Vilayaatu Pulla”
Tried and tested!!!!

And for the “nee eppo kalyana saapaadu poda pore” you can always answer:
“Unga ponnu (or paethi) enna kattika sammadicha udane adutha muhurtham la kalyana saapadu poatuta poachu.”
