Rajni, Shankar, A.R. Rahman and AVM have got together for the first time. The expectations have been too high for this movie. And how are the songs? Do they live upto the expectations? Shankar and AR Rahman have been a great combination right from Gentleman. So, how is it this time?
I went into Music Yogi’s distribution office in SP Road, and got my CD at 8 AM itself
This album has 7 tracks. Am not sure if all of them would be picturized. I would be happy, if they are
Balelakka - SPB, Raihanah, Benny & Chorus 6.06 Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
Song starts with the women singing ‘Sooriyano chandirano. Yaar ivano sattena sollu’. Forget listening to this song in a movie hall, as this is Rajni’s intro song. SPB is at his usual best with the combination of pulse raising drum beats at the background. And dont even try singing along with SPB. You might run out of breath, when he goes sadugudu sadugudu. Decent song, which you will get to hear umpteen no of times in the future. Super beginning!
Style:Rags, Tanvi, Suresh Peters, Blaaze 5.10 Lyrics: Pa Vijay
First one minute you wonder whats happening. Then you get to hear the Guitar, and the pace of the song picks up. The song is all about Style, from what the lyrics suggest. ‘Ada ada asathudhu un style un style’. My favorite part of the song is when Tanvi goes ‘ragaLai sei rowdhiraveera, miraLa sei manmadha maaRa, kani thedum kalagakkaara’. These lines really took me by surprise. As in, the song is kind of western in pronounciation and lyrics. All of a sudden you get to hear description of a guy in chaste tamil. Too good.
Vaaji Vaaji Hariharan, Madhushree & Chorus. 5.47 Lyrics: Vairamuthu
A song where Vairamuthu flaunts his Tamil
‘Poombaavai aambal aambal punnagayo mouval mouval’. Hariharan sounds different in this song. Slow rhythmic beats accompany Hariharan and Madhushree. Guess, I need to listen to this atleast 1 more time. I was so tempted to listen to Rahman’s song, that I didn’t listen to this again
Madhushree disappoints
Athiradee: AR Rahman, Sayanora 5.45 Lyrics: Vaali
Frankly speaking, first time I heard the song I was disappointed big time except for the electric guitar. Listen to it 3 times, and you will be hooked to it for ever. Electric Guitar rocks big time. Deadly beats, funky lyrics like ‘Thee thee thee jagajyothee jagajyothee Billa Ranga Baasha dhaan ivan pistol pesum beshaa dhaan’. Rahman was changed his style of singing, and altered his voice modulation as well. Effect is brilliant. If you have a good music system, then this song will be in your playlist for quite sometime. And that electric guitar. Sigh. I wish I had a Bose home theatre, just for this song. Brilliant song. Do listen to it, back to back 2 times and you will know what am talking about. I would like to know how many layers BOSS has used in this song. Vaali has let his hair and beard down for the lyrics. Cuba, Castro, Roger Moore, Eddie Murphy all feature in the lyrics
And yes, I feel this sounds similar to JAM of MJ. But some say Dangerous. Am not too sure. But the traces are there at only 1 place. Its not a remix song
Sahana: Udit Narayanan, Chinmayee 5.19 Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Vintage Rahman. Lovely melody. Udit Narayan has got a lot of flak for his pronounciation. But he seems to have put in lots of effort to get it right. And it shows. Except for few places, his pronounciation is decent. My respect for Chinamyi has risen, after this song. Is this the same girl who sang ‘Tere Bina’. She has so much variety in her voice., especially the diferent ways of singing ‘ohohoh’. Is shankar a big fan of Mridangam or something. I have observed Rahman and Harris(In Anniyan) use Mridangam quite prominently in his movies. In this song, the Mridangam is not prominent but you surely cant miss it. Rahman comes in the middle and sings dheem thana dheem thana.
The Boss: Blaaze, Naresh Iyer, Raqueeb Alam 3.18 Lyrics:Na.Muthukumar, Blaaze
When the song starts, you feel the swoosh from right to left. I somehow got a feeling, that this music would be used many times in the movie, whenever Rajni does something crucial? Was anticipating a theme music kind of thing. But the lyrics of this song let me down big time. Did T Rajendar write the lyrics? ‘Vaada vaangitu vaada beeda vaangitu vaada beeda vaaila poatukoada poda poda pozhachu poda’ or something like that and then ‘Sachin adicha sixer dhaanda Sivaji adicha puncher dhaanda’. Seriously, lyrics spoiled this song
I couldnt concentrate to the music, due to this stupid lyrics. I dont think I will like this song, even though the audio clarity is mindblowing. Even Pettai Rap lyrics sound better than this. Cha!
Sahara: Vijay Yesudas, Gomathi Sree & Chorus 4.30 Lyrics:Vairamuthu
Can I nominate this song as ‘Song of 2007′ please? Unlike his dad, Vijay Yesudas can pronounce La rightly. This is the sad(?) version of Sahana. And then Gomathi Sree sings Thirupavai, then a flute piece followed by Vijay Yesudas humming ‘Sahara’. Aaaha. Bliss. The song is only for 4.30 minutes. Wish this songs duration was 10 minutes. Where were you Gomathi? A great find for Tamil cine music. Hats off to you! In my opinion this is the best song of the album, and one of the best song composed by Rahman. Wish Rahman composes music for Thirupavai and Thiruvembavai. Vijay Yesudas, Flute player(Naveen?) and Gomathi compete with each other to bring out the best. Lovely!
Overall, the album is really good and has lived up to my expectations. You have a typical Rajni song, followed by couple of stylish songs and then both versions of Sahana. You can buy this song just for the sad version of Sahara. Gomathi. You have a fan here. You are the star of the album, just after BOSS.
The Audio CD costs 100 Rs. You get a poster of Rajni, lyrics and also a VCD of Baasha. Worth buying it.

Wondering how the picturisation will be, esepcially for Athiradi.

That was a nice review man…I do accept Sivaji will rock this year.
Regarding “The Boss” song I would like to put forth like this since it is a Rajini movie it should cater to all type of audiences so I feel this is for the front bencher’s.

It explains the gist in few words as possible
Thank god i didn’t listen to “The Boss” song first. The lyrics has really spoiled all Rahman’s Effort

Hi Prabhu,
“My respect for Chinamyi has risen, after this song. Is this the same girl who sang ‘Tere Bina’. She has so much variety in her voice., especially the diferent ways of singing ‘ohohoh’.” - Prabhu
Chinmayee is the one who sang Kanathil Muthamittal title song from Manirathnam’s KM. Simran in Blue sari along with Keerthana.
She has already shown her classic..
She is also the one who anchors Vijay TV Super Singer Junior.

Athiradee the Song of the Year. Awesome song. I just cant stop listening to it. This is going to compete closely with Newyork nagaram for the most repeated song in Sun Music !
and yeah BOSE illama pochey !
Its much more interesting when you repeat Sahara(VYesudas) and Athiradee … alone !!
I am surprised as in in ballailaka - its a nadaswaram. Im sure it is digitally tweaked !
And prabhu - re read the review after 5 days of listening the album … see if you can change someting … Coz you might feel like re wrting some comments !

Hi
I have done with hearing the Sivaji songs for the first time and dint know how i spent my last 30 mins. There is nothing new to say coz Prabhu Ferrari has already done it. Last track is too good but still i feel that flute music and the beginning of the tune is already used in Uyire Movie (”Vinminai thandi….”) but still that was a small track used in Uyire and this one(Sahana-Sivaji) is a nice song to end the album.
Sivaji Music - 75% Rahman and 25% Rajini
on 02 Apr 2007 at 12:51 pm # Karthik S
I’m with Raj’s comment above mine. Strangely enough, unlike Padayappa - where rahman’s touch was largely absent, in Sivaji, Shankar seems to have given him a free hand. Result? Except Balleilakka, every other song bears Rahman’s distinctive touch. Is that a good thing? Rajini fans may be in a better position to answer that.
on 02 Apr 2007 at 1:19 pm # Mukundhan
Is Udit Narayan really needed for the Sahara song ? I mean is his voice so good, to make him learn tamil lyrics and make him sing it. I somehow feel it just not worth all this.
I really don’t like his voice, I somehow feel it is breaking in high pitch. On top of this, his pronounciation is bad.
on 02 Apr 2007 at 1:56 pm # sami
Superb review ferrari…u have written everything..nothing more to write.
Thala(ARR) had made it for Thalaivar…in a stylish way.
Esp Ballelikka, Athiradi, Sahara (both), Oru koodai are too good.
As you said lyrics played spoil sport for vaada vaada (the boss)..hope rajini and shankar overcomes it with the visuals.
feeling a lot better when compared to chandramukhi songs were released. Initially felt CM songs are not that good then felt better with visuals. in that sense, i feel that these songs will be excellent with visuals.
I go with raj, 75% ARR , 25% rajini

machi, the sahana song had definite hindi song beat..
it didnt sound good with Udit Narayanan singing it..
But now am hooked to it, from morning havent stopped listening to the songs!!
The song Athirade has definite Arabic influence…
But with Ballelaka ARR proves only he can give that kind of intro song for thalaivar…

– I would like to know how many layers BOSS has used in this song. — Prabhu
This is the most striking aspect of Rahman. Harris Jayaraj’s songs are instantly hummable but seem to lose their feel in a short while. Thinking about, his (HJ) songs are hollow in a kind of way. There is nothing like, the more you listen to it, the more layers you identify. Its one-dimensional as well. Rahman is outstanding here. Khalbali from RDB is a good example for this. Tbis is also the reason why I swear by ARR. Every song of his, I believe has more to offer than just 1 hearing. Also the fact that Rahman’s songs dont appeal at first hearing is because he is original most of the time and so you have to give some time for a new tune to sink in.

I listened to the songs. I wonder why ARR took this much time to release this crappy work. I think those who appreciated about this music album didn’t came across any good music in your whole life. To me, Its really not worth buying a CD.
I believe ARR has reached his saturatio point like sachin tendulkar and he can better retire from music. Even the so claimed melody song “sahana” or “sahara” is not upto the mark.
A song is considered good when it really reaches audiences at first instant, not by listening it 5 or 6 times.
I would give 10/100, and that 10 goes only to Rajinikanth.
Better not to hear..
on 03 Apr 2007 at 5:12 am # Ashwin
vivek, i completely agree with you. ARR has so many layers in his music. I listen to yuvan or harris and it doesnt sound strong. But ARR has this strong composition in his music and the layers he puts in there contributes to it.
As for the music, i was dissapointed at first (the beta release aka the leaked songs). But after a few listenings, after getting all the songs, ive gotten hooked (once again because of the layers).
Dont know if there are many video gamers here but the beginning part of Sahara sounds exactly like the intralude for the beginning of the nintendo game Zelda. I think its just the instrument he used.
Anyone here the “power rangers” part in The Boss. i couldnt understand what he said after that.
on 03 Apr 2007 at 5:27 am # Ashwin
2:03 to 2:12 in vaaji vaaji is what i liked the most from the song. If tweaked a little, I think it would be an awesome BGM. Reminds me of the mid 90s ARR for some reason.

on 03 Apr 2007 at 11:25 am # Vivek
Anon,
Just you are just proving what I had to say. You like it the first time, you listen to it 10 times and after that you hate. This is becos there is nothing else the music has to offer. Unlike ARR, the tunes may not hit you instantly cos they are primarily original dude! and listen to it 10 times, you will find different sounds beneath and above various layers and its almost like a treasure hunt, waiting to be unearthed.
on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:09 pm # Karthi
my second comments here.. I heared songs lots of times.slowly I feel like some music/tunes or some tracks are from “new”(SJ suriya) movie? .. may be I’m wrong.. any body have my thoughts ?…
“kaveri aruum” sounds like “Rajathe Raja” intro song.. “selu selu vena kulir” type song I guess.
Where is Rajni’s “Thathuva padal” in this movie missing ?..
Like ” Ettu Ettu manausa valzva perichukoo”
“Vanthenda palkaran …” (annamalai)
Or “Vetri kodi kattu”( Padaiyappa)
Lyrics you cannt hum (people will think you are TR fan then
)
Also, soory to tell you guys.. SPB voice some how I felt like ” Sivamaiyam Ana Arunachalanea” (tiruvanamalai Song) type.
Udit -no no man– V.Bad Tamil pronoun. Why not “Karthik” or “Naresh iyer” ( sillnu oru kadhal)
Please, tell me what do you feel guys !

too much hype kuduthuteene prabhu … the whole album sounded recycled to me
Balelakka was sooo like devuda devuda … but okie thats a rajini song n appadi dhaan irukkum
… vaaji vaaji too
** Sahana, Vintage Rahman. Lovely melody.
I thought so too until my mom came up and sang this song - ‘orE naal unnai nan nilavil paathadhu’ from ‘illamai unjal aadudhu’ composed by illayaraja … goes in the same tune as ’sahAna saral thoovudho’ … ABSOLUTE DITTO excepting for the trail which ascends in the original … what are the odds that two music directors come up with the same stuff and its coincidence
nevertheless the song is gr8 to listen to :D, sahara too
style song felt like ‘New’ song from ‘New’ recycled … didn’t that come tyur mind :-/
honestly the rest of the songs were so lost in theme … rajini vechu picturization pannina proly nanna vandhudum … they sound like an aimless potpourrie
in fact the grudge guitaring in The Boss has come in an old movie prabhu, although I dun recollect it … from a pretty old movie
… suresh peter’s voice did remind me of Pettai rap
I didn’t c much quality originality in this by ARR … many of these would do gud on screen with rajini of course … ARR’s ability ku idhu let down nu dhaan solluveen

nice review thanks for the effort.
athiradee = something new , quite funny tune at first hearin but soon ull automatically get attracted to it
sooriyanum sandiranum= ill say that this song is gd because of two main components, good meaningful lyrics and the superb singing ability of S.P.B.
sahana saaral= nice song wif a slow paced rhythm but i personally felt that the rhythm could be much better cos i felt that it wad pretty common.
sahara pookal= this was one of my favourite song. well luved the tune of the song which i felt was better than the another version. the thirupaavai is simply well placed in the song and kudos for A.R.R for a great song.
oru koodai sunlight= was sumthing i neva expected in the a rajini film but hey its here! something new but certainly i thought it was not good enuff in quality as there are already many other songs better than it for example Kaadhal yaanai in anniyan .
vaaji vaaji = good song wif some north indian influence but i like the chorus of the song something which makes it stand out from other fringe songs we hear.
vaada vaada = no comments. jus a BGM for rajini entrance but nothin else.

How India performed in the world cup cricket is the same as what Rahman has done for the movie. Shankar should have done a lot in the video segment to augment to the loss in the audio to make the show appealing.

Rahman has really worked hard to give perfect touch especially for Rajni’s film. Nowadays lot of people citicize on Rahman’s music . May be due to Himesh effect.

Just now listened to all the songs and they are quite good and catchy…one this i really miss is a title track like in the movie “Ah Aah” for the thalaivar…what a punch of lyrics it had….really miss it… apart from it i also pray that these songs are picturized/choreographed by Raju Sundaram should be better like for every Shankar+ARR+Raju songs…. not like the “Ah Aah” one… that title track was totally mindblowing but the picturization failed it really…

As usual ARR does it for Rajini; a flop music which will anyway rock the public just for thalaivar’s charisma. Early days ARR stole music bits from Enya (Jeans, Kadhalan BGM), Enigma, Dr Alban (Mukkala Mukkabla),..etc (The list is too long to publish). Now a days he started with Eminem and Michael Jackson too. He is not even Sachin dude… he is Sehwag.
Recently been to Birmingham Symphony hall and was told ARR failed to compose a symphony for the first time (eventually he did that the second time) and these (rah)maniacs call him Musical Genius.

hello folks,
i have been reading the reply to my reviews. come on guys. you got to accept criticism. This itself shows that you are “Fanatics” and could be compared to cricket extremist who gave us much hype about india winning world cup.
Can you guys tell me if any of the older ARR songs (be it gentleman or jeans) is featured or played in FM? are those could be heard again or has it reached our heart? the real answer is No.. But you guys have to believe that..
I still say sivaji songs are not up to the standards.. No songs in his film are catchy and it becomes hit just because every “fanatics” listen to it for more than hundred times

one more thing i forgot to add.. we often know that ARR is doing a carbon copy of western music, the song which ARR sings (shouts) Athiradee, is a copy of MJ album “dangerous”
The other one, “Balelakka”.. There is one music piece which was copied from vidyasagar’s thirumalai “thamthakka theemthaaka” vijay’s intro song.
and that suryanum chandranum, starting piece is a copy of his own junk “thriuda thiruda”

hi !! annonymous . You see different people like different music .So you cant blame people who listen to his music are mindless or something like that . You might be the person ,who does not like his music . But i am sure you might be the person who likes the music composed by somebody else. And you see if you dont like his music. Then please do not listen to his music ,instead of simply commenting on his musical work.
And regarding copying of music, believe it or not there are lot of music directors who had copied rahman’s tunes ,including the music directors like Harris Jayraj himself, about 70-80% of his tunes are copy cut music from Rahman’s tunes. Lot others do , including Himesh Reshammiyan copying from old music directors like Shanker Jaikishan etc.. Even you dont think the western music directors are original once, they too might copy some of the tunes from somewhere else and mix with some other tunes and create one new tune .You simply cant blame for that, infact 80-90% of his tunes are original , the other 10-20% of his tunes might be copy cut music from western music directors.

I listened to this album the day it was released. Let me tell you this … the first time I heard the songs, I was shocked, angry and disappointed with ARR. I compared ARR with the Indian cricket team. Too much hype and quickl fizzles out. I listened to the album a few more times and now my impressions have completely changed. The songs are brilliant! Just love them and I am sure with Shankar’s picturisation, it will be a BIG HIT. Eagerly looking forward to the release.

“yes, ARR changed the the history of Indian music from Good to Worse!! “
come on dude, anonymous, an indian who has composed musics for foreign language films (warriors of heaven and earth) and being a part of the stage adaptation of Tolkien epic Lord of the Rings is no joke and u think as an indian achieving such a think is making indian music worse… then what can i say about u taste of music…..
btw, if u mean that the FM songs where they put only those stupid sufi music, which is just a junk/mass copies of arabic songs and their 10 paise remix versions, which suck sometimes more than a vacuum cleaner does after listening just 5 or 6 times, is making Indian music any good than these achievements…then ur just another jerk who likes to listen to crap music….
and Enignma Fan, thanx for comparing his music to that of MJ’s and others…at least u accepted that his music composing style is of international level like that of MJs and Eminem’s… no other music composers in india are of that standard as far as i think, even though they copy directly from them…even those xeror copies that others do doesnt even sound original……. at least whatever songs that ARR copies/inspires in his music sounds original/stands apart from the other xeror copy formats that we listen on the day to day basis on the FM…
Let me tell one thing… to this day, watever music ARR has composed stands apart in terms of composures and that can be seen in the way he has sold more albums in his 15-year career than all other crappy music directors who has been around the same number of years or more in this field. Well, this just my POV.

Excuse me!!! people who hate ARR. Look if Rahman’s music is that much western oriented then why would the producers from west would have recommended to give music in their film especially in “LORD OF THE RINGS”. Then why would his music would have got an entry for oscar original music category (2006 for WATER and RANG DE BASANTHI). And you people keep on saying that western music directors are original .Then listen to their music carefully , you see almost all the songs have same shit beats. Atleat ARR keeps on changing his tunes, though it did not work in films like Mangal Pandey,Guru….But even then Guru was tolerable enough to listen . But after the release of the album “PRAY FOR ME BROTHER” and “RANG DE BASANTHI”, he disproved disclaimers that he still is the best. Now you disclaimers you just compare the songs released recently composed by other composers and those composed by rahman ,you might like the songs when you listen it for first time ,but after that you will feel bored. But it is revese in case of rahman’s music ,you will start feeleng better and better once you listen to his songs repeatedly.

And other thing i would like to say is that even songs in “SIVAJI-THE BOSS” are good ,or i would say excellent.
