Ay Hairathe – Lyrics

Movie: Guru
Lyrics: Gulzar
Singers: Hariharan, Alka Yagnik
Music: AR Rahman

Dam dara dam dara, chashm chashme nam
Dam dara dam dara, chashm chashme nam
Sun mere hum dum
Hamesha ishq mein hi jeena
(Dam dara)

Ay hairathe aashiqui jagaa math
Pairon se zameen zameen laga math
(Ay hairathe)
(Dam Dara)

kyon urdu faarsi bolthe ho
das kehthe ho do tolthe ho
jhooton ke shehenshah bolo na

kabhi jhaankhon meri aankhen
sunaaye ek daastaan
jo honton se kholna
(Ay hairathe)
(Dam dara)

do chaar maheen se lamhon mein
do chaar maheen se lamhon mein
umron ke hisaab bhi hothe hain
jinhen dekha nahin kal tak
jinhen dekha nahin kal tak
kahin bhi ab kok mein
woh chahre bothe hain
(Ay hairathe)

Dam dara dam dara, chashm chashme nam
Dam dara dam dara, chashm chashme nam

(** chasm means eye and chamse nam mean wet eyes (deep in sleep) , dam dara also means a word that specifies something deep.So the whole sentence means that the the person is in deep sleep or trying to sleep **)

Sun mere hum dum >>> Listen to me ohh my sweet heart
Hamesha ishq mein hi jeena >>> Always live in love
    (Dam dara)

Ay hairathe aashiqui jagaa math >>> Ohh my love don’t wake me up
Pairon se zameen zameen laga math >>> Don’t put your feet on the ground

(** if you will put your feet in the ground I may get up with that sound **)

    (Ay hairathe)
    (Dam Dara)

kyon urdu faarsi bolthe ho >>> Why are speaking in esoteric language
das kehthe ho do tolthe ho >>> u are telling 10 and u are measuring 2, it says that the person is a cheat
jhooton ke shehenshah bolo na >>> oh king of lie, tell me now

kabhi jhaankhon meri aankhen >>> for once peep into my eyes
sunaaye ek daastaan >>> they will tell you a story
jo honton se kholna >>> the story that my lip can’t speak
    (Ay hairathe)
    (Dam dara)

do chaar maheen se lamhon mein
do chaar maheen se lamhon mein
umron ke hisaab bhi hothe hain

(** from last two four months i am counting my age in every moment. That means every momment he has missed someone or has waited for something to happen …. here it means he has waited for his marriage **)

    jinhen dekha nahin kal tak
    jinhen dekha nahin kal tak
    kahin bhi ab kok mein
    woh chahre bothe hain

(** the person whom I haven’t seen before ….. now somewhere inside my body (my heart) he’s leaving an impression of his face (kok means inside my body here kahin bhi kok mein indirectly speciafies the heart) (bote means seeding a plant, here it means he’s created an impression of his face) **)
    (Ay hairathe)

  13. Nimit says:

Thank you for the meaning of the whole song, but what does the phrase “Ay hairathe” specifically mean?

  14. shital says:

thank you for superb explanation and yes, there is a deep meaning in the song. what language those new words belong to? sweet and heart warming..

  15. Gagi says:

    Good explanation of the song…
Too good to hear now after the meaning given by Subhransu.

    Thanks…
    Gagi

  16. anonymous says:

the phrase ‘ay hairathe aashiqui’ is actually read as ‘ay hairat-e-aashiqui’ and is urdu for ‘the wonder of love’. So the first line would translate to ‘dont wake the wonder of love in me’.

  17. Anonymous says:

    Hey Subhransu,

That was really amazing… Could you also explain the similar lines to dam dar dam chashm chashm-e-nam in the other song…

    it sounds like

dam dar dam dar mast mast dar
o humdum bin tere kya jeena…

It would be excellent if you explain the other lines in this song too…

    Thanks a ton in advance…

  18. Daisy says:

thnks for the meaning…it makes sense now!
Whats a song without meaning.. Thanks for clarifying that Subransu, Well done

    tc

  19. Vivek Subramaniam says:

From what i know of hindi (I’m from Mumbai), hairat roughly means ‘astonishment’ or ‘surprise to the point of disbelief’.

Hairat-e-aashiqui means the astonishing feeling of love.

So I guess the first line means, “Hey, don’t arouse the astonishing feeling of love”.

And contrary to what somebody claimed above, it is “MAT” and not “WAT” . It’s easier to understand the words when Alka sings it. Hariharan gets the slight tamil accent while singing, which makes it difficult to understand.

  20. MEERA says:

thank you very much for the translation, apreciated a great deal, alot of us do not want the wonder of love awakened inside us..

    really beautifull song

  21. Anonymous says:

The translation as i understood it is:

    Aye hairat-e aashiqui jagaa mat..
Pairon se zameen zameen lagaa mat..

Means o wonder of love, dont let me awaken ..
Dont let my feet touch the ground..(this means the person wants to continue being in the trance, the euphoria of love)

    kyon urdu faarsi bolthe ho
why speak languages tough to understand..

das kehthe ho do tolthe ho
you say ten but mean only 2…

    jhooton ke shehenshah bolo na
tell me o king of liars…
This is like a tease.. the lady is playfully accusing her lover of being a cheat and a sweet talker..

    kabhi jhaankhon meri aankhen
    look deep into my eyes…

    sunaaye ek daastaan
    they tell a tale…

    jo honton se kholo na
which you can unravel with your lips…
this is a defence with a plea for a kiss…

do chaar maheen se lamhon mein
do chaar maheen se lamhon mein
in just a few seemingly short months…

umron ke hisaab bhi hothe hain
    decades count be accounted for…
this according to me is the wonderful time they have had in a short while they spent together…

    jinhen dekha nahin kal tak
    jinhen dekha nahin kal tak
    kahin bhi ab kok mein
    woh chahre bothe hain
the faces that were unknown to us till now, are now seedling in the womb..
    kok is womb.

I suspect this is a beautiful way of describing the unborn children

  22. RagSpinner says:

what a holy mess these interpreters have made of his song…Mr. lyricist Subhransu, please do not insult gulzar ssb’s imagination by your convienient and deplorable construction..and Mr. Anonymous, kindlybremain anonymous before you get *#%d for the blasphemy you have committed..

  23. Annonymous1 says:

    I agree with ananomys transaltion.

kok means womb , so the line emans, person whom we had not seen before, now is father of my kid, that means how much dearly that unknown person has become. If i recall correctly these line is shown when aish is shown expctant
