Guru – Music Review

Mani Ratnam. AR Rahman. Gulzar. This movie stars Abhishek Bachan, Aishwarya Rai and many others. Right from the day this movie was announced, I have been eagerly awaiting for the music. You dont get this combination so often, do you? Guru is yet another reason, why you should have a good music system at home. Once again, I was the first person to get a copy of the Audio CD from Landmark, probably the first in bangalore too. Before we get into the review, the audio CD is bit different from the other CD’s. For the first time, there is Mani Ratnam’s image inside the CD cover. And a dedication from AR Rahman

The song “Tere Bina” is dedicated to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab – fondly remembering his association with me through this decade – AR Rahman

Barso Re: Shrey Ghosal, Uday Mazumdar.
Shreya starts with her humming ‘Na re Na re’ and within few second Naveen joins her with his flute. Both of them kind of tease you for the first 30 seconds to gather your attention, and just when you start paying close attention the drum beat starts. First time I listened I literally blurted out ‘Poadu(Hindi equivalent sabaash). A foot tapping song, but not very fast too. 3 things make this song very good. Shreya’s voice, flute and the drum beats. Actually, the drum beats are very prominent but no where they intrude in the song. Its in the background and soothing when shreya is singing, and when she isnt singing the beats are in the foreground. And when Shreya sings ‘Bhailon ki ghanti baji, Aur taal lage barne’ you can hear the claps. As if someone is clapping at a distance. And the song reaches a feverish pitch at the fague end. From the pictures, looks like this song is picturised when Aishwarya is on a bullock cart.

Tere Bina – AR Rahman, Chinmayee Additional voices – Murtaza, Qadir, Dialect Coach – Raqeeb Alam

Irrespective of the number of songs of Rahman that were a hit, the songs sung by Rahman will hold a special place in the heart of any Rahman fan. Am really glad that, Rahman is singing a song in every movie of his nowadays. The song opens with the male voices singing ‘Dum dara dum dara’. A very pleasant feeling, when these guys go ‘Dum dara dum dara’. And when Rahman starts off with ‘Tere Bina’ I get this feeling. Imagine you humming ‘Dum dara dum dara’closing your eyes, and Rahman comes near you, placing a hand on your shoulder and sings ‘Tere bina beswaadi’. Super! And is it Chinmayee? Wow. She has really worked hard for this song, and the effort shows. I sincerely feel this is a concert song, that will feature in his future concerts. Imagine the whole crowd going ‘Dum dara dum dara’ and Rahman singing the song. Oh Rahman. Bin tere music kya jeena?

Ek lo Muft – Bappi Lahiri, Chitra Additional voices – Tanvi, Saloni, Boney, Jaidev

This is a funky folk song. Picture shows Abhishek clad in traditional attire, dancing with a glass on his head. From the song, looks like Abhishek is picturised high on spirits ;) Bappi Lahiri’s voice suits Abhishek perfectly. And its funny when the women sing, joyyen joyyen joyyen. I think this song will be more appealing, once we watch it on screen.

Mayya – Maryem Toller, Chinmayee, Keerthi Dialect Coach – Devika

A very stylish song, which I feel is kind of fusion. As in Maryem Toller’s voice sounds very prominent, where as Chinmayees voice is like a whisper. And dont miss the flute bit, after the first few lines. Best way to appreciate this song is to listen on headphones, or on speakers that are spread wide apart. Its like music traverses from left to right and back to left. Especially when Maryem goes mayya mayya and eheh eheh. And listen to Maryam giggle in the end, when the chorus goes ‘Mayya Mayya’. Item number, to be picturised on Mallika Sherawat. No wonder :)

Ay Hairathe – Hariharan, Alka Yagnik Additional Voices -AR Rahman, Aslam Mohammed

I love Tabla. This song has a similar beginning to that of Tere Bina. Except that, Rahman sings ‘Dum dara dum dara’. I really am not sure of the instrument. It sounds like that ‘bulbuldhara(?)’. And its heavenly. Am sure, this will be the favorite song of many. I love the way Hariharan sings ‘Ay hairathe aashiqui jagaa math’ and gives a break for the tabla to continue. Too good. And this is a misleading song. You kind of set into a romantic melody mode, by the first end of first stanza and the tune catches you by surprise. The pace increases, when you least expect it. And again back to the melody mode. Alka Yagnik’s voice just melts on you. You just cant stop humming along with this song.

Baazi Laga – Udit Narayan, Madhushree, Swetha, Bhargavee Additional Programming – Pravin Mani

The tune is just like that of a 70’s song. Imagine Abhishek running around and singing this song in full josh. One more song that will be good with the visuals. Very fast beats, and should be good for dance parties I feel. Another song that must be heard on a good music system to actually appreciate it. Ends with a nice flourish.

Jaage Hain – Chitra, AR Rahman, Madras Chorale Group
This is a motivational song. Very few lines of lyrics and more of instruments. The Madras chorale group has done an amazing job. Should go very well with the theme of the movie. I somehow feel, this theme will be frequently used in the movie in parts. You actually forget that Rahman is also singing this song. He slowly comes in a very low voice. Like singing so low, that the voice doesnt disturb others. Like a lullaby, and after few seconds at his typical high pitch. Really a motivational song. Listen to this, when you are really low on spirits. You will definitely feel better.

Finally, it was really worth the wait. Different sounds, but the same Rahman magic. This is not a funky album, which will be repeatedly played in pubs and other places. Its a classy album. If alone these songs had been for a different director, I would have been really worried. But these are under the safe hands of Mani Ratnam, who never fails to do justice to Rahman’s songs. Add to it, Rajeev Menon is the cinematographer. I just have one fear. In every Mani movie, one song will not be picturised completely. ‘Ajnabee’ from ‘Dil Se’, ‘Nenjamellam/Badal’ from Ayutha Ezuthu(Yuva) etc. I wish he doesnt chop off any of the songs. In this album, importance is given to the human voice and lyrics. It will take some time to grow on you, but you wont regret your decision of having bought the CD.

Go get it! Dum dara dum dara dum dara!

the tune of dum dara dum dara part sounds uncannily similar to a 4 line sloka on ganesha (goes like siddhivinayaka namo namaha …)that used to play in a loop at a temple near my house..very catchy tune! :)

Ay hairathe beginning reminded me so strongly of poo kokiyin punnagai from iruvar..just the first few seconds…and the middle part of jagge hain sounded like the background of udal mannuku from iruvar again.

    AR RAHMAN U ROCK MAN.

  32. Sivaraj says:

Prabhu, gr8 review. i pre-ordered the audio-cd by seeing the ad in musicyogi.com that.. audio will be released on nov 15th itself in musicyogi.
but it got released on 18th only and i got the cd thru courier today. got fed-up on that. bcos i want to listen the songs as a first now. but anyway i listened the sample audio clip for four songs and already fall on love with that.

from today, guru songs will be my “suprabatham” in morning, “thalattu” in nights. what to do , have to go office and work for 9am-8pm know. otherwise i will be listening keep on. Legend is Legend. We cannot compare ARR to anyone. even illayaraja. even hes gr8 musician, his style is different.

But ARR awakens the Youth generation. otherwise every youth will fall in music with MLTR,Backstreetboys, Geoerge michael, Michael jackson etc…,

We still listening those versions also, but whenever our ARR songs get released we are start celebrating our music festival. bcos its indian. we have to be proud about him. jai hind.

  33. Shuba D says:

  39. Michelle says:

I felt the beginning of Mayya Mayya had strong touches of Machakaari. And somewhere in the middle it had hints of Satrangi Re/En Uyire. I’m completely hooked on to Basro Re. Shreya Ghosal just becomes better with every song.

  40. Niyaz says:

    hi guys,
i am diehard fan of arr.
to me he is just awesome.guru may not be his best,
    but surely a great album.
conclusion…..one of the best of arr.no one can have
    lot of best.but only one.
as for the songs 5 out the 7 is classy,
but the other 2 ek lo ek muft and baazi laaga
    are probably fits the script.
i just wonder why everyone is dissapointed by arr.
for composition,if it is bad don’t you think you should blame legend gulzar saab also for his lousy lyrics.and also mani ratnam to choose such a situation for such songs.
please guys, arr is a genuine composer, he is loyal to his work.before critising him try to make sure that the lyricist or the directeor gave him a nice project to work with.

  43. kashif says:

since 4 days i am listening to GURU songs and i feel listening again & again.
Every song has it style, in the beggining i didnt like bappi lahiri ek lo ek muft song but now i like this song too toooooooo muchhhhhhh bcoz thats the magic of ar rahman it takes times to hit a song but it will hit.

  46. Ameer says:

    Hi Prabu,
Very nice review, I dont know why some of us (rahman fans) had wrote their review that the ARR-Mani combo doesn’t met their expectations well, Its really hard to digest you know. :(

Guru has got all the elements, after all its ARR+Mani film.

I simply love all the tracks and its growing more & more day by day.

Can’t wait to see the movie in big screen.

Well My fav. tracks are Tere Bina, Ae Hairathe, Jaage Hain and Mayya Mayya.

    Long Live ARR !

    regards

    Ameer

  47. Sivaraj says:

    Hi kashif,

i too not interested in the bappi lahiri song intially but after hearing 2 or 3 times. im loving it like anyother. fantastic song.

    Hats off to rehman.

Now i dont want these songs to be dubbed in tamil, because if they dubbed originallity of music will go. rehman have to compromise few things like wordings….etc… for making into tamil dubbing.

i hope mani will not do that mistake.

Dilse and uyire(tamil), Yuva and ayutha ezuthu(tamil) both audios released simulataneously, so there is no problem in it.

i dont want rehmans to get fade in the name dubbing.

    what u say kasif

  48. Ramesh Chinnappan says:

It’s really a nice and great review. Personally feels that, Except Mayaa.. Everything is great..!

  51. PV says:

Nice Review! Rahman and Mani are back with a bang!!

  52. ramize_27 says:

wait a min.. the songs are all nice.. but is it me or is there one string of music copied from the movie asoka.. ok.. in mayya mayya listen to the first part.. just before she starts singing.. its the same music from asoka’s raat ka nasha abhi..
well anyway arr does it again!!!

  53. shravan says:

Great review. Tere Bina and Aye Hairathe are amazing. The other songs are great too.

  54. madhu says:

    really kool song’s….

  55. kashif says:

    Hi Sivaraj,

YES UR RIGHT, RAHMAN SHOULD NOT DUB IN ANY OTHER LANGUAGE.

DUM DHARA DUM DHARA JASHNU JASHNU

  56. kashif says:

GURU ALBUM IS GOING TO BIG HIT BUT U HAVE WAIT COZ THE MORE U LISTEN GURU IT WILL GROW WITHIN U

  57. prasad says:

another example to prove that rahman is running out of tunes…
except for a couple of songs ..rest r ordinary stuff.

its high time mani switches over to HJ.

  58. Sivaraj says:

    hi prasad,

i hereby strongly opposing your words that rehman running out of tunes.

and someone saying that “rehman copying”

    above things are not true.

how can one get the recognization internationally from all the indians all over the world by donig copying and running out of tunes.

this music album based on movie story. it has variety based on situation of the movie.

do you know the sales numbers of guru.

    its a blockbuster man.

all songs are awesome. its the word from everyone, who bought it and enjoyed.

i need to tell onething here, no.of directors asked rehman to remix the old songs. Rehman denied everything and he approached in different manner. he took the old lyrics and presented the new fresh tune and music.

eg., thotall poo malarum from the tamil movie (New)

true music fans cant digest these comments.

He enters when the Indian music was falling fade and repeat the old passion.

Now, no.of music directors following his style.

  59. Sivaraj says:

comparing rehman with HJ, its like comparing VIV RICHARDS with Muthiah Muralitharan in batting.

  60. Aditi says:

I am in love with “GURU” music. Me and my husband go for a long drive just to listen to this album. Thanks ARR..We both fell in love again. Can just go on listening to tere Bina and aye hairaythe ashiqui .

Thanks for a gr8 review as well..

    ARR is Music God!!

  61. asif ismail malik says:

Tere Bina – AR Rahman, Chinmayee Additional voices

comment on arr.it makes you nothing but asshole……….

  63. kashif says:

since GURU music came i am continuosly listening, in between dhoom, babul, bhagam bhaag and now latestly salaam e ishq came but all went up and now all gone down like made a six run and got out. But but but GURU music is growing like anything as if going to go for big journey or a big triple century.

Some of the songs like el lo ek muft, mayyo mayyo and baazi laga which are not so best but trust me these songs going to be the big hit song in coming days,

what do you say guru music listener.

  64. Sivaraj says:

    Kashif,

i will not agree the words “are not so best”

if not best, then how are you saying it will be a big hit.

    so its not like that.

    all are superhit always.

    no need to categorize.

  65. kashif says:

    Sivaraj,

u didnt get my point, what i mean the songs which are top in the chart is barso re, aye hairethe, tere bina,
jaage hain but other songs, like as usual ar rahman music gets late pick up and goes forever. so the same with guru songs. For me, i am listening these songs as much as i can and i enjoy each and every song of it. So iam giving the same view to audience, keep listening u will enjoy all the song. sivaraj enjoy “tera bina sona pitthal”

  66. showkath khan says:

  68. ljah says:

amazing. listen to it and its good songs, listen closely and the intricacies are even better.

  69. tony says:

    Rehman sucks big time!
GURU is not worth listening to!
Rehman-Mani combo has failed for the first time!

Wish i could say those lines, but hey GURU speaks for itself. Switch of the lights, put on your headphones, close your eyes and play GURU. Its paradise. esp Tere bina.

Keeping ma fingers crossed for the next one. come soon SHIVAJI

  70. harmony says:

the jaage hain….probably should resonate for eternity…well atleast a decade… Perfect harmony of Indian music , opera and orchestras in the west, Choir and finally Ar’s voice touching the sky…

    Truly a masterpiece… a genius works
I have not seen the movie neither I intend to cause movie is certainly not “pyassa”!!

True to a genius’s stature, rests of the songs are barely songs enough. Plithora of throwaways before a masterpeice.

  71. jayashree says:

i dont know where he gets his talents from
    guru songs are simply amazing
    specially tera bina.
i just love it and i spend most of my time listening to

    really really amazing

  73. Mohammed Raquib says:

i used to here all the songs of arr
    in channel V or M
for the first time I bought a Original CD of Guru
bcos the songs of guru is so popular due to arr
no doubt in that we cant expect that much from
other directors they used to give same touch
    to the songs
finally guru is not just a name of a film
    its also pts to arr

  74. Mohammed Raquib says:

    TONY
u r right he sucks more time
but give the best, u cant expect from other Music Dir
    action speaks louder than words
    like that arr never speaks
    his music only speaks
    have a nice day tony

  75. Ramsub says:

In Mayya Mayya, the BG music starts and ends with a brief flute interlude that appears readily lifed from the movie Asoka song “raat ka nasha abhi” by Anu Malik. Can’t imagine Rahman do this without a good reason. Can someone comment or think of why he did so?

  76. sara says:

ramize_27 ur totally right, i actually googled that and found ur comment coz i was thinking the same thing!!! Its a total lift from asoka!!! WHY?!?!
