The person who coined the English term Payee, surely doesn’t know tamil. Imagine a conversation in a bank
Customer: There seems to be a problem with this transaction
Bank officer: Who is the payee sir?
Customer: My husband/wife is the payee
He he
And to make thinks interesting ICICI Bank portal, has a section called ‘Registered Payees’

Actually this Tamil-English post reminded of a joke I heard looooong back.
This old man who had been working in the same library for 50 years (British era) was grumbling about the lack of respect he got from the Brits: “Why is that podiyan at the till given so much respect and called a ‘cashier’ when I’m 60-plus years old and everybody calls me a ‘librarian’?”
