Sports Redefined

Right from the days of MGR till Surya, atleast in one movie the hero must be a sportsman. Or atleast a single scene/song where the physical activity(in sports) is exhibited. If MGR was an expert in playing ball badminton (mixed singles with saroja devi. Who can forget the parakkum tok pandhu parakkum tok song?) the current generation is obsessed after football. Maybe not cricket, since everyone will start a debate on cine cricket?
Ok. Coming back to football, here are some observations. Some movies follow all the below, or just a few.

1. In cine football, there is no concept of defender, midfield player or striker. All 20 players(except the goal keepers) will run after the ball at the same time.
2. The heroine will watch the game from stands
2a. If the hero and heroine havent fallen in love yet, then she will be impressed with the hero’s game and that will be a catalyst for the love.
2b. If they are already in love, then the hero will be hurt during the game. Or there will be a dream song in which the hero will be playing football
3. Cine hero MUST score a goal, even if he is a goal keeper!

Having said all that, watch this video between 1 and 1.33 minutes. Good fun, I say! If you have video links under ‘sports in film’ category please post the link

@ramya – Yeah, I too didnt like the football scene for that ‘rango rangoli’ bgm. The fact is, I have listened to ‘munbe vaa’ too many times that when I watched the song yesterday, I felt like puking. Hell, I could have directed it better.

@prabhu – Surya pathi edhavadhu sollala naa ungalukku thoookam varadhaa? Ennada, thiddernnu sports-movie mela akkarinnu nenachan. Ippo le theriyudhu.

’2a. If the hero and heroine havent fallen in love yet, then she will be impressed with the hero’s game and that will be a catalyst for the love.’ ?? Tch tch… A catalyst can just accelerate or decelerate a reaction..never initiate it. Chemistry!!!

Heroes mattum illai. Heroines kooda tennis aadraa maadhiri yelaam neraya scenes vandhu irukku.

I can remember Khushboo smashing a few balls into orbit with her forehand smash in some movie :)

Prashant and Karan playing a tennis match in ‘Kannedhire Thondrinaal’. Karan’s shots there could give Federer, Nadal a run for their money :)

  13. Maverick says:

Naming Prashant when talking about heroines playing sports in movies – That was unintentional.
