Sillunu oru Kaadhal Movie Review

In some movies, the background music will usually be an instrumental of the lead song. I somehow feel, Rahman must have used the BGM part of New York Nagaram more in this movie. Especially the part ‘Kodumai Kodumayo’. Thats my verdict on the movie. As usual I wont tell the story line. Here are my views.
1. Surya, Sothika and Bhoomika are all droolable(I drooled only at Bhoomika). In fact this is the only movie in history of PVR Cinemas, that they take 15 to 20 minutes to clean the theatre in between shows. Guess lots of drool, and tears in the last half.
2. In the first song, there is a green saree lady next to sothika. Who is she?
3. The movie does start very promisingly. Very different approach, and the whistle sequence in Surya’s house after the opening song is pretty good. And slowly the whistle tune, shifts to the title track tune. Neat!
4. Surya seems to be very versatile. He is good in this movie. If I remember right, he didnt dance well in his first movie. Then some magazine made fun of him, and he learnt dance with a vengeance. Guess he should focus on aggressive scenes too. I observed this in gajini, ayutha ezhuthu too. Somehow he is not that convincing in aggressive scenes, as he is in romantic scenes. But then, he has acted really well. Sad that all his effort has gone waste in such a pathetic movie. Please do not act in such pathetic movie Surya.
5. Sothika is the same. And when she cries, she reminds me a lot of thevayanee err devayani. But then I am not her(sothika) fan. Maybe people who like her, might like her a lot in this movie. Her performance here is better than Vettayadu Vilayadu performance.
6. Bhumika does what is expected of her in the first half. Her second half role somehow doesnt suit her. I even found her repulsive in second half. Maybe role demanded it. But then the entrire second half of movie is repulsive
7. Vadivelu is getting back to the kovai sarala days comedy. No vadivelu no. Please dont gets back to that yucky comedy.
8. Santhanam has done an amazing job.
9. Why is that, when a girl cries her guy stretches his hand to comfort her but refrains from doing so?
10. Carry a pillow for second half. Yaaawn!
11. How is Sothika’s thali, the same yellow all through the movie? No change in color?
12. Why are cine kids adhingaprasangis?

Finally, the songs picturisation and placement. I have never seen a Rahman movie in which songs were so pathetically placed. Its not enough if the movie name is displayed as ‘A.R.Rahman isayil Sillunu oru kaadhal’. They need to be properly placed for the right impact. Butter nan is good. Paneer butter masala is good. And rasmalai is also good. But you cant have butter naan and rasmalai for the main course, and paneer butter masala as the dessert. Can you?
Does the choreographer know tamil? If yes, how can the lines of the song ‘new york nagaram urangum neram’ be picturised in broad day light. I have never been to newyork. But then, I dont think people sleep there in broad day light. Do they? What comes to your mind ‘naangu kaNNadi chuvargalukulle naanum mezhugu varthiyum thanimai thanimayo’? I am sure none of you can think of this. Surya sitting in a restaurant having lunch or whatever. All 3 sides, there are concrete walls. And glass door. And a candle burning during day time?????? Picturisation sagikkalai. Kodumai kodumayao! In fact surya tries a lot to bring out the emotion in this song, but our dear editor makes sure it is not clearly visible. Did the editor hate surya or something?
The BGM was good, but during Suryas college scenes they were bit loud :(
Munbe vaa song was decently picturised. Thank god!
The rigari BGM bit and its transformation to munbe vaa tune was very nice. Especially after the cafeteria scene.

I never thought I will say this. We do need directors like Goutham Menon. After watching SOK, my respect for Vettaiyadu Vilayadu has increased exponentially.

Finally. If you are planning to watch this movie, go with a group of friends as I did. Its nice to make fun of the second half and stay awake. Else you might sleep off. And yes, I need to mention about the thiruttu VCD Thyagarajan sitting in front of movie. He captured almost half of the movie in his mobile. Maybe it will be released in all VCD shops soon!

Sillunu oru kaadhal. Javvunu(sorry sorry) savvunu yawn oru yawn padam. Watch at your own risk!

  3. vatsan says:

some people claim they actyually liked the movie……..

    kodumai!!!!!!!

and vadivel sucks, wat going bck to kovai sarala days? only in winner and vetrikodikattu he was decent,

    rest bullshit

  4. Vincent says:

I watched the 6.20 show at PVR too :) You forgot to mention the baby that kept crying during the movie. My normal rection would be a few ‘Shhh’s followed by a ‘(Pls) Take that baby outside’ yell at the parents but this movie was so bad I didn’t mind the baby wailing. Really, what kind of sadistic parents bring their babies to cinema halls and ruin the movie for everyone else? Only in this case the movie was already a mess.

  5. Srivathsan says:

if i am correct the lady in “green saree” comes in lot of serials

  6. Lavanya says:

    >>Does the choreographer know tamil? If yes, how can the lines of the song ‘new york nagaram urangum neram’ be picturised in broad day light. I have never been to newyork. But then, I dont think people sleep there in broad day light.

Err…Prabhu, I haven’t watched the picturization of New York Nagaram yet and if it is picturized in New York then your point makes sense. Otherwise it will be daylight in Mumbai when New York nagaram sleeps. No?

Neat review. I guess I’ll just wait for the DVD then.

  7. cheenuorugodhal says:

[if i am correct the lady in “green saree” comes in lot of serials ]

Yes she also acted in few movies. I guess in kolangal play .

  8. Zero says:

    >> 9. Why is that, when a girl cries her guy stretches his hand to comfort her but refrains from doing so?
This dates back to Nayagan (not exactly the same scenario though)!

    12. Why are cine kids adhingaprasangis?
Idhulayum Mani Rathnam sir’ukku perum pangu undu. :)

  9. :-) says:

hey i have been trying so hard to find time to watch the movie…even thought of bunkin office actually…. ur comments sounds like its not worth it……

  10. Jala says:

I went to the movie to see the picturisation of songs.
New York nagaram is kodumai.. Not up to the expectation.

  11. Ravi says:

now nobody can blame ARR for running away from tamil movies. if his soulful music been murdered in the screens, nobody can expect him to stay here. what a waste!!!!

soorya is laughing and rejoicing in this song, pathetic……….

  12. randramble says:

    Enjoyed reading your review.

Zero: ‘adhingaprasangi’ kids were more intolerable in Bhagyaraj movies, which came much earlier…

  13. Zero says:

    randramble,
That’s why I said Mani saar has a perum pangu! I wasn’t criticizing him, but many followed suit and didn’t do as well. :)
Enna Prabhu, the kids here were poor versions of the Mani Rathnam kind, right? ;)

  14. Kumari says:

Aiyyo! Appo padathula naan romba ethirpartha andha ore pattum gus-a?:((
Panner butter masala, rasmalai analogy superab. Idhukku thaan kidney venumgrangalo? :)

  15. Shuba says:

Kalakareenga prabhu– ur review sounds extremely balanced though u dont like surya i suppose?!!
    well
//Sillunu oru kaadhal. Javvunu(sorry sorry) savvunu yawn oru yawn padam. //

Nice way to conclude LOL.. Any film I expect to do well seems to fail pathetically..

  16. Shuba,
The most positive things in this review are about Surya. And yes, I am not his fan. But if am not his fan, does it mean I hate him? Cant someone be neutral? ;)

  17. Durga says:

The new York Nagaram scenes were all filmed in Switzerland (except for the first few seconds over the statue of Liberty in NY).
You’ll notice old European architecture and of course the sights of Luzern.

Do they think the viewers are that stupid? That we’ve never seen or been to Europe??
ahh that makes me soooooooooooo mad!!!

I actually thought the movie was OK (look i have to think that coz I paid $15 to watch it. ahh!!!)…yes the songs were placed badly…and Jyothika looks upset most of the time…she does the ‘chadramukhi’ eyes when she wakes from her dream in part 2…the whole ‘diary reading by current girl’ theme from Ghajani was repeated (bytw don’t peopel keep a diary in teh present and not past tense? ohh anywaysss)… The lil kid was bloody annoying…(are all kids like that at 5? wth?!)…and Boomika (part 2) plays the ‘slut NRI’ role well…I agree I liked her better in part1. Boomika looks so petite next to fatso looking Jyothika.
The sex scenes are a bit too much naa?
Aiyoo no need to imagine their first nite paa…just watch the movie….(especially how he chases her around the house and they end op making love with the bedroom door open)

    *sigh* so pathetic.

  18. Vincent,
Very true. BTW I didnt hear any baby crying. Atleast near the place where I was watching the movie ;)

    Adiya,
    :)

    vatsan,
Some people I tell you ;)

    Srivathsan,
Oh! I didnt know that since I dont watch any serials :D

    Lavanya,
    It was picturised in switzerland!!!

    cheenu,
    Thank you. But which serial?

    Zero and randramble,
I agree. The kids in anjali, bombay were atrocious!!

    :-)
Wait for it to be telecasted in TV

    Jala,
    Yes

    Ravi,
    Bulls eye!

    Kumari,
    Ya ya :D :D

    Durga,
1st night scene aa? :O By any chance you are referring to the majaa majaa song?? But adhu 1st night scene illaiye. And true. They could have atleast requested vaali to change lyrics to ambasamudhram urangum neram or kuttampati urangum neram. And picturised neatly here itself. Producer paavam

  19. ramya says:

interesting review. m disappointed anyways, i thought it will match kaaka kaaka or better than that…:( lot of people gave negative feedback…m yet to watch…

  20. Jeevan says:

Ennaku ziriputhaan varuthu! i too expect the song New york nagaram picturation will be like Vennilava velli velli nilava song VV. it was disappoint. Good review Prabhu:)

  21. SV says:

I happen to hear the JOK songs y day (my bad luck..) In one of the websites, they mentioned all the songs were in top 20. But it was pathetic to hear the songs. Not even a single song is worth to hear. I think ARR can retire from scoring music for Tamil and leave way for youngsters.

Dont know on what basis they released Audio CDs. even its not worth it for free

  22. Karthi-Bangalore says:

Prabhu, I too didnt like the movie.. But read a Ulta review here :)

  23. Raj Chennai says:

At last i got a chance to read the real review of SOK. I was jus wondering how some commercial sites were encouraging this movie. SOk dint have as such any good scene to share with others or self. I wasn’t prepared for any expectation abt this movie when i watched it on first day sangam theatre chennai. I would seriously appreciate the crowd who entertained us in the second half, if not them i shud have left the hall an hour before.

The green saree lady u were referring actually acted in movie Thavamai Thavamirunthu as anni character. Hope u referred to the same lady.

Anyways that was an acceptable review from Prabhu..

    Raj..

  24. marudh says:

I dont watch movies often, only when there is too much hype to it or if I like the heroine, and this movie happened to have both. I mean bhoomika here. Munbe vaa was exceptional, bhoomika is gorgeous in that song.

Vadivelu needs some serious counseling. College scenes were good with santhanam around. Overall, I would not say this movie is pathetic, it is in the average genre. Common guys, think about the story, it is such a trite and how can you expect the director to change the world to make it interesting. He has done a decent job with the screenplay.

Also, some of you are criticizing the new york nagaram song, I disagree. Think about the timing of that song. Movie was turning really sentimental, everyone in the audience about to sleep, and it would have been worse if surya started to cry in that song. I think the song was a good change, and with ARR voice it is a real treat.

  25. Anoop says:

see this video… guess better than the movie ;-) http://www.youtube.com/v/zrwj6UduW-k

  26. Gireesh says:
