Jillunu oru Kaadhal Music Review
Thanks to Vaali for another album with full tamil lyrics.
New York Nagaram: AR Rahman.
I would say this is the most pleasant song from the album. The way this song starts is very nice. I have never heard Rahman hum like this. Its so different and playful. This is one of the rare solo of Rahman, in which background music is given predominance than his voice. Though the song starts in a playful mood, it gets sober later on. Lyrics suggest that the guy is missing his girl. Soulful lyrics from vaali. Lyrics in full tamil
‘naangu kaNNadi chuvargalukkuLLe naanum mezhugu varthiyum
thanimai thanimayo. Kodumai kodumayo’.
Lines like these are really nice.
‘vizhiyil vizhum dhoosidhanai yedukka nee ingu illai.’
‘manadhil ezhum kuzhappamthannai theerka nee ingu illai.’
‘naan inge neeyum ange indha thanimayil nimishangaL varushangaL aanadhu yaeno’’
‘jil endrum bhoomi irundhum kuLir kaalam kodai aanadhu yaeno’
Don’t miss the way he way goes ohohhhooohhhh in the middle.
I am reading some reports that this song is picturised at Alps of all places I would be happy to be proven wrong, but I feel this song can be picturised in the streets of any city. A ‘Tanhayee’ from Dil Chahta Hai type picturisation would do wonders.
Jillendru oru kaadhal: Tanvi
This is the title track. Its like the 70’s jazz. Tanvi has sung the song very stylishly. This kind of sets the mood of the album, and movie as well. Reminds us a little of the iruvar song ‘Vennila Vennila’. I hope some justice is done to this song, and they picturise it instead of using some crazy graphics!
‘kaalayil kaadhali maalayil kaadhali
velayil kaadhali selayil kaadhali’
sillaRai pesuma selaigaL pesume kaadhal’ .
Ha ha. Funny lyrics
Kummi adi : Seerkazhi Sivachidambaram, Naresh Iyer, Swarnalatha and Theni kunjaramma
‘avaLukkena ambasamudhram iyer hotel alva madhiri
thaazham poo ena thaLa thaLanu vandhaa vandhaa’. What was that? he he!
Foot tapping number of the album. Naresh iyer shows enough versatility in this song. No wonder Rahman uses him so frequently off late. This guy has a great future, if he keeps singing like this. And Theni Kunjaramma after a long time. For a second I was wondering whether this song was for a bharathiraja movie. Lyrics and the choice of instruments(nadhaswaram, thavil etc) suggest that. A very well made folk song. And somewhere before the last stanza, the pace slows down a bit when they sing this ‘thanaathaananana part’. And picks up, when seerkazhi sivachidambaram starts off with kotuhum seval part. Do listen to this song, if you are feeling a bit low. It will really pep up your spirits! And I really want to see who is going to dance for the final flourish. Can surya dance that fast?
Machakaari: Vasundhara Das and Shankar Mahadevan.
Vasundhara a gorgeous singer! And a perfect combination for her, one Mr Shankar Mahadevan. Looks a very mischievous song. Vasundhara starts off at her trademark pitch, and Shankar mahadevan joins her with a naughty nannaanaanaa. That nannaanaana tune is the main one for the song, but in a faster pace. This song is a roller coaster ride. Sometimes its slow, sometimes its fast and sometimes really takes you by surprise. Especially when the beats are full western towards the end, Shankar mahadevan sings in a classical way ‘en solveno’. And he repeats the same after a while when he sings ‘thaangadhe machakaari’. Too good!
Maaja maaja: Shreya Ghosal and SPB Charan
A sensual song.I somehow feel SPB should have sung this song along with Shreya Ghosal. Man! What a sweet voice she has. konjaraaa paa. But I am not that impressed with this song mainly because of SPB Charan
Maaricham: Carolisa, Aslam and Krishna
Is suryas name Goutham in the movie? Its kind of funny, when the lady calls out ‘Goutham Goutham Goutham’ in the middle. And this song has the most purest tamil of all, and the funkiest beats ![]()
yaar idhu un poorvam edhu
enna theedhu pugai moodi nindradhu
en yaakai uyir veLi nindradho
minnal oraayiram oLi koNdadho
This has to grow on you.
Munbe vaa: Shreya Ghosal and Naresh Iyer
All those girls who drool over Surya. This song is for you! And hey, enjoy the guitar(?) in the starting!
munbe vaa en anbe vaa
ooNe vaa uyire vaa
munbe vaa en anbe vaa
poo poovaai poo poovaai
naan naana? kaetten ennai naane
naan neeya? nenjam sonnadhe
munbe vaa en anbe vaa
Good that Shreya has sung this song. I doubt if someone else could have done justice to this. Especially the way she adapts to every stanza. In the first stanza it is yaekkam, as in longing. And in the second stanza she is content or overcome with her guys presence, and later goes again to the longing mode, followed by konjam vekkam and poi kobam( Listen when she sings ‘naan saayum thoaL mael vaeroruvaL saaindhaal thagumo?’) And Naresh Iyer provides good support in the entire song, especially in the ‘nilavinil vaadagai vaaNgi‘ part
After some time, a full romantic album from ARR. It was worth the wait. Do buy this album guys. Its worth it. I sincerely wish that the songs are picturised really well, unlike Ah Aah

Being honest, i was dissapointed with JOK.
1 Initial attractive song list roaming on the net with impressive singers was not in the original.
2 Only kummi adi, New York and Munbe vaa were good.
3 Imagine there is no song with an attractive beats, guitars and rythms as he did late in 93 with chikku bukku railu.
4 all i see is a conscious attempt from him to change from his usual style. but very few will like husky, sensual songs. Snehidhane though potrays same amount of love is more decent.
5 above all this album should have been like this
a fast song for youth with electric guitar and drums more western than kollywood style
b good romantic with shreya ghosal and naresh iyer
c new york song
d one song say for 7 or 8 minutes with little lyrics but more music which will be something new for any tamil film
e one sole female song by harini/shreya ghosal very melodious but modern bgm
f good instrumental with naveens flute as title song
g on mass folk song like kummi adi..
i can’t imagine how great that would be when picturised in manhattan, alps, canada, new zealand, chennai streets with R D Rajasekhar on suriya…
AMAZING…
Anyway lets enjoy what we have got here..

The review was very good. I listened to songs soon after seeing ur review. Actually I don’t feel the same as many of you here. I like the song “Newyork nagaram..” but the rest are only ok. Apparently my expectations are different. I like songs similar to those in “Alaipayuthey “Ayutha ezhuthu”… So J(S)OK not my type

Really a different album from ARR but not great as he did in Roja, Alaipayuthae, Bombay, Aaiytha Yaeluthu and many of his earlier movies.
Though I am a hardcore fan of ARR, I really feel that something is missing in his recent albums. Many of his earlier songs really stirred the soul…
But ARR should be appreciated from being different from others who are always doing “Kuthu” songs.
Expecting more from ARR…

I would like to tell onething to madhumita (review commenter on august 8th 2006)here.
All ARR songs will be a definetly hit.
Hes not like any other Music director i.e., giving flop songs sometimes, even they are good music directors.
But Rehman always give a good and hit songs.
His songs are categorized into 2 ways
1) Instant Hit(Eg., boys, bombay and many more)
2) Rice hit(we have to cook rice to eat, similarly u need to listen atleast 2 or 3 times to enjoy the real good music, these songs can be identified as hit immediately by the persons who they have knowledge in music. For normal listeners it will take time, that too not long period, after hearing 2 or 3 times)
This Album is a super dooper hit. U will change ur comment after sometime(im 100% confident).
Regards
G.Sivaraj

I think that the string instrument that has been used throughout the song is the mandolin (probabaly electric mandolin); this was also used in the second interlude of “Nenjam ellam” from “Ayutha Ezhuthu”
