I went to an Indian Restaurant called Punjab over here, for dinner. There was a nice looking Indian girl there(Maybe the owners daughter, daughter in law or whatever. For my convenience sake lets say it is his daughter). She was wearing a traditional chudidhar, long hair in single plait(otha jadai eppadi paa solradhu?), kajal in eyes(kaNNukku mai azhaghu), bindi on the forehead(pottu vaitha oru vatta nila). She was very beautiful. Sigh! But I fail to understand why she was wearing a Nike shoe? Cha! avaLoda kaalum saamuthrika latchanam padi irukaa paakalam nenachen. sodhappitaaLe!

Well, I seem to have an answer here. When I was in VA for 5 months (most of it was frigid winter), I saw Indian ladies wearing sarees, salwar-kameez, and other Indian dresses and their feet were covered with shoes. I did ask one of my friends whose wife also did the same. Cold will not get to the feet if they are enclosed within shoes. Women shoes/slippers are usually delicate and smaller, unlike heavy set men’s slippers/shoes. And therefore shoe is a better choice in this case.
Some women who have flat feet also prefer to wear shoes.
