Progress Bar

I never understand the concept of mentioning the duration in progress bars. For instance, if you are installing some software it will say 2 minutes remaining. Thats fine. But thats not the case. The 2 minutes remaining message appears for 5 minutes. Its so stupid. I have observed this in so many applications. Its nice to keep the user informed. If you ask the companies, they will say it depends on the internet connection speed, machine configuration yada yada. But then, whats the point in making a prediction just for the sake of making it? Sounds silly to me :P

May be we can spend the time we are waiting, by finding out the time we are actually asked to wait and find the ” mathematical Variance” of it from the time mentioned :D

Sharp observation.I have also wondered about this – maybe, the prediction module was outsourced to Linda Goodman originally and is still being reused :-)

  3. What you point out is a valid gripe. But look at the problem like this.

How would you like to be in a queue, blindfolded ? – you dont know how far you are away from the counter, you dont know how long it takes for each person and so on…

It is altogether a different story, if after knowing all of these, the person in front of the line has the most devious questions and ends up taking 1 hour ;)

Couple of deep breaths and you should be ok :)
