Correct me if am wrong, but does the camera flash cover a range more than 3 or 4 metres? No right? When that is the case, why do people fire the flash while taking picture of an object in distance. For instance, if you watch the football matches, when a striker is near the box, immediately you can see people firing the flash like crazy. I dont like taking pictures with flash. It somehow makes the photo artificial.
Talking of flash, I got my new digital camera yesterday. Canon Powershot S2 IS. Old one, I had given to my brother. This year, am on a buying spree. First there was Nokia N70. Then Lenovo N100. And now this. High time I stop
But wait. The wide angle converter for Canon seems to be good
Should I go for it. Noooooooooooooo

I think Most of them take pics in Automatic mode so they don’t decide when the flash gets triggered.
Btw, as long as you don’t have any reflective surface in front pics with flash might look less artificial. Besides when you adjust Flash power manually you might not see those over glowing faces or Objects. Works well for a patient photographer.

my two cents..
1. the camera that people use in the football matches are the use and throw model. they flash all the time.
2. people have a wrong notion of “flash”. they think that it has something to do with the power of the camera and cant figure out that the flash is to reflect enough light from the target to make an impression on the flim.

auto-mode. that’s why the flashes go on all the time. and with those kind of cameras, the flash is often insufficient to cover the entire range of a football field!
i don’t like to use the flash myself, but I have noted some advantages with a mobile phone camera. at least mine. SE k700i
cheers!

Canon Powershot S2 IS!!! ooohhh good buy! I almost bought one before Dell decided to arbitarily cancel my order. So then I wanted to go for its equal - The Sony DSC H2. Finally bought the H2’s successor , the H3 a week after it officially released. The camera is a dream! I am still playing with it figuring out all the options and everything.

Canon Powershot S2 IS is a great camera.. I’ve recommended that to alotta people.. but it’s a bit pricey. I don’t see a prob with that, if you like it, just go for it eh? If I didn’t have my Canon Rebel XT I would have gotten S2 IS.

Some flashes do have a range of 10 meters and more ! but thats not the point ..
You are right its no point flashing a landscape .. and I find it irritating as well - particularly if I see someone carrying around a huge SLR and doing that mistake.
But times when although it might seem stupid - flash comes in handy
Football match, stadium is lighted, players have enough light on them but the light around the stands is not good enough.. camera meter reads flash or use the slow shutter speed. Now you wouldn’t want to use a slow shutter speed - to compensate that you either set the camera at manual and underexpose the shot, use spot metering (which some camera might not support) or let the camera believe its using a flash.. sure you will get stands dark but your subject that is lighted will be bright enough! Saves you the time of calculating the right exposure.. and does the work for you!
I might have confused you here.. but yes on camera flash is evil .. either use a bounce flash (can be done with a cardboard for any on camera flash) or don’t use a flash at all..period
S2IS is a nice camera, have fun playing with it!
bumped into your blog from Indiabloggers..
