Dear Rajdeep Sardesai,
It is Tamilnadu(Thamizhnaadu). Not Tamilnaad. If you cant pronounce it, better refer as TN. How will you feel if someone calls you as Rajd Sard? Idiot!

My favourite is the other Rajiv’s version, Rujeev Gandee - adhavadhu namma late PM.
Tamil (’Ta’ as in Tammy) Naadu (perilously close to the name of that Gult clan)

He is a Big Man of High esteem. i dont think its a big mistake .Atleast, u should not label him an ‘Idiot’ for this.
Disappointed.

As a matter of fact even many Thamizhans cant pronounce ‘zh’.. it becomes ‘l’ only…

Yeah! ‘Zha’ sound is something that even many Tamizhans find it difficult. So, the anglicised version of ‘Tamilnaad’. Idhukke idiot naa namma ooruliye irukkara paadhi makkal with ‘thamizh’ as their mother tongue-a enna solradhu?
By the way, gazette la namma state peru enna theriyumaa?

Ferrari never commented on the ‘zha’ part. He was referring to the Hindi way of truncating the last syllable - Thamizhnaadu or Tamilnaadu truncated to Tamilnaad.
Lets start calling appalam as appaL, padam as pad… and as Ferrari rightly said, Rajdeep Sardesai as Rajd Sard….
on 12 Apr 2006 at 1:58 pm # sreekrishnan
@bala : pappadam is already paapad !
on 12 Apr 2006 at 3:07 pm # puranjoy
Hi Ferrari,
Have been a reader of your blog and a big fan as well, though never commented. This was uncharacteristically harsh from you. Disappointing.
Is the u at the end of nadu the same one at the end of prabhu? I think it is the short vowel one at the end of many other tamil words (paaru, naadu, etc). Of course, I am not a native speaker of tamil, and hence might be wrong. If I am not, to the uninitiate north indian, it does pose valid problems. And to an untrained ear, it often sounds like the vowel is not there.
It is not as much Rajdeep Sardesai’s fault as much it is the deficiency in the Hindi/English language–the lack of an equivalent vowel. Just like Tamizh lacks consonants for bh,kh, etc. Does it make one who cannot pronounce typically Hindi words such as khabar, bhaarat, etc an idiot?
This problem of not being able to pronounce words in an alien language because of the mother tongue is called Mother Tongue Influence. MTI is more noticed in the BPO sector, where Indians have difficulties getting rid of it. And degrading one, yes including someone as successful as Rajdeep Sardesai, suffering from it is hardly fair.
Come on Ferrari, you have got a very wide audience. Please be a bit more tolerant with other people’s shortcomings. Of course you can argue this is your blog, and you can pretty well put in whatever you like; and nobody can refute that. But I guess you do have some responsibility towards your readers.
Sorry for the rather long comment :).

sreekrishnan,
i was referring to ‘padam’ as in film/movie
on 12 Apr 2006 at 3:27 pm # F e r r a r i
Sorry for disappointing you folks. But at the same time I am disappointed that you are disappointed with me, instead of getting disappointed with Rajdeep.
Rajdeep very well knows it is Tamilnadu. I have never seen Rajdeep commit a mistake when he pronounces chandrababu naidu, venkiah naidu, karunanidhi, jayalalitha etc which are far tougher when compared to TamilNadu. Can he dare do that? Where is the MTI when he mentions the politicians name?
And not just that. Kannada is pronounced as Kannad, Kerala as Keral. So you mean to say irrespective of what others say, we should say chalta hai and ignore it eh?
Being tolerant with shortcomings?? Its not shortcoming. It is laziness and because no one cares a damn. If he is a high esteemed man, let him atleast bother to mention the name of the states properly. Or atleast make an effort.
And yeah. Why bother? CNN-IBN is busy compiling a programme on the most sensual kisses in bollywood. Watch it live
on 12 Apr 2006 at 5:18 pm # Jacky
Irrespective of his pronunciation skills he will continue to be an IDIOT for getting desperate, feeling helpless and being emotional on his shows. Sometimes his personal reactions supresses how the news and its public reactions evolve. We end up seeing just How one man reacted to it!
on 12 Apr 2006 at 5:44 pm # Bala (Karthik)
Right said Ferrari and Jacky! [claps]
“CNN-IBN is busy compiling a programme on the most sensual kisses in bollywood.”

Good post, very good comments. I am slowly reconsidering my initial impressions about this man. While I maintain that he is more of a showman than a news presenter, he is improving slowly. The news content in his channel is more page-3 types than more serious channels like Aaj-Tak, Headlines Today, NDTV etc.
As far as pronunciation is concerned, he should take care because he is addressing the entire nation via his news channel. But at the same time, it need not be a point to crucify him. North Indians do not possess the linguistic skills on the tongue that South Indians possess, like the “zha”. All Indians south of Vindhyas are Madrasis for North Indians, all dialects are Andu-Gundus, all scripts are same “Jalebi”. The North-South divide exists and will remain. South Indians view Northies with a certain degree of contempt, whether you choose to accept or not.
End Note? This is not even something to be discussed at this length. There are more serious things that deserve this much of debate.

@Rubic.
“Aajtak, Headlines Today, NDTV are serious channels?” beats me…
Rajdeep Sardesai is from Maharashtra and in Marathi there is this “zh” vowel.
He is more suave and intelligent than other anchors
@Prabhu,
I used to thought your views are more liberal but after reading this post i am really disappointed!
on 12 Apr 2006 at 6:45 pm # F e r r a r i
Jacky and Bala,
RC,
Though I agree with you on most of the post, I dont agree with NDTV part
Yogesh,
Sorry! But does being liberal mean support Rajdeep Sardesai? Pls have a look at my response above. When Rajdeep can take special care when he pronounces Venkiah Naidu, Jayalalitha, Karunanidhi etc why cant he do the same for Tamilnadu.
on 12 Apr 2006 at 6:48 pm # ganeshram
PPl,
Dont forget his days in NDTV.His elegance of anchoring the ‘BIG Fight’ can never be matched.
on 12 Apr 2006 at 6:53 pm # F e r r a r i
Ganeshram,
Yes. Agreed. But what purpose does it solve? If alone Mr Rajdeep would like to be on the firing line, many of us have 2000 questions to ask him. Lets see how he fares then! Just because his english is good, and he can ask good questions doesnt make him the best!
on 12 Apr 2006 at 8:19 pm # sreekrishnan
@bala : yup sorry ..got that ! … just that sequence of appalam ..caught it so ! …
BTW
@ppl who are disappointed : CAn you please go to Karnataka and pronounce any kannada word wrongly although u r not the native and wait for the response .. waiting time is less;)
and dont they tease how ‘tamilians’ speak English, the way keralites speake english and the way others speak english ..as if north indians speak english clearly ! …
(this is a personal experience)
I hate to categorise like that (as northies, keralites etc etc )! ..still ! … IF they tease so .. we just expect them to say the basic words of the language as the state name , capital name, or ministers name ! …. although i dont expect them to speak thooya thamizh ! - Else stop critisizing the south Indians pronaunciation ! …
on 12 Apr 2006 at 8:31 pm # ganeshram
My point is , he cannot be definitely labeled an “IDIOT” sighting just this.
on 12 Apr 2006 at 8:42 pm # F e r r a r i
Sreekrishnan,
My point is different. I dont want to generalise. I know many people from maharashtra and delhi who can pronounce zha better than our fellow people
ganeshram,
Sorry! You seem to hold Rajdeep Sardesai in a high esteem, which in my opinion HE doesnt deserve. Everyone has an opinion. Peace!!
I am sure one day you will realise what this fellow really is

Rajd Sard’s quality is deteriorating by the day, and CNN IBN as a whole sucks! The only thing that seems important to the channel is sensationalizing things and yelling out “A cnn ibn exclusive” for every damn thing on earth… If my neighbour’s cat gave birth to kittens that too would be covered as a cnn ibn exclusive… disgusting!
Ofcourse, every channel does the sensationalizing part, but these guys somehow seem to overdo it… and ofcourse, hearing him say Tamilnaad, Kannad etc is absolutely irritating!

hi,
I did not find anything other (like a reference) than your couple of statement in the post. I did not understand what made you so much pissed off!!!
There are certain pronunciations in some languages, which are totally alien to others. So they end up writing whatever best they can write with limited members English alphabet. That all depends on how did he see people writing it and what is the nearest it might sound. The convention “zh” is really not popular in states other than TN and kerala. Even in TN I have seen its written either ways.
If Raaj has written such thing intentionally or mockingly, I find there is some necessity of your post. Still I think, you could have posted it in a better way
One more thing to ask, do you pronounce/write banglore as bengLuru , mysore as mysooru( you might have heard the local pronunciation by now), Sanskrit as samskritam. I did not see such “sticking to original pronounce” in your blog. Why? Those will make your posts look strange don’t they?. People have found some popular way to write. Lets not object it.

Good post Ferrari! couldn’t agree more, Rajdeep Sardesai’s a scum bag, most of them are. I’ve heard Charu Sharma trying to pull one on South Indians during the third umpire session. He even had the gall to call Andhra : Central India ( as the “CEO of DD Sports or some such big shot” was a part of the session and was an Andhraite..!! )
