This is election season. And Amma has been nominated for Nobel Prize.
Now that Amma has been nominated, it is not fair for others to be left out. Looks like no one else is nominating. So on behalf of all leaders, I have taken up the responsibility.
DMK Chief Dr Kalaignar Karunanidhi will be nominated for Pulitzer Prize, for his udan piRappu kadidhams.
Anti-Hindu is the sponsor for Sangita Kalanidhi awards. But being a secular organisation they feel that all carnatic music singers sing songs praising Hindu gods only. So there are high chances of them being rated as communal by the secular forces, if they award the prize to any carnatic singers. To avoid this glitch, they have come up with a new award called as Sangita Dayanidhi. The first recipient for this award will be Abdul Hameed for his extensive contribution to music by conducting paatuku paatu in Raj(?) TV. Ofcourse these awards are sponsored by BSNL
And they will be distributed by Sonia Gandhi.
Ramdoss will be nominated for safeguarding tamils award. The reason is, he sent his son Anbumani Ramdoss, daughter in law, grand daughters etc to delhi. Oru Ramdoss ey tamilnadu thaangalai. Idhula avar payyanayum thaanguma? Abirami abirami!
Not born together sister is being nominated for Golden Globe Awards, since she has lots of gold and looks like a globe
Vaiko is nominated for Taurus World Stunt award, for his latest political stunt.
Prakash Karat is nominated for The Harvey Awards. This award is for person who contributes to comics. Mr Karat is the unanimous choice for this award from a country of 1 billion. No one else can be so comical
MK Stalin is nominated for World Tourism Awards, since he was the ex-mayor and has menjufied at many places.

“But being a secular organisation they feel that all carnatic music singers sing songs praising Hindu gods only.”
==> This is really insane!! You have absolutely no idea how much The Hindu has patronised Carnatic Music since 1890s, right from the days of the earliest stalwarts like Chembai, Tiger, Ariyakudi, Madurai Mani Iyer etc. If you had ever cared to read their annual almanac The Hindu Speaks on Music, you will find hundreds of archived articles of concerts ranging from last century, the 40s, 70s and 90s. Even now Gowri Ramnarayan regularly comes up with detailed reviews of December concerts! Just because you dont agree with one facet of the Hindu, you dont have to go to such ridiculous limits and fabricate insults. By insulting a fine patron of music, you have merely covered yourself with cowdung.

thetalkativeman,
Whatever you say was started/patronized prior to N.Ram and the secular crowd took over Hindu. And those are being continued by these secularists on public demand. They cant stop something popular right?
If that is the case, you shouldnt blame the congress party since they were instrumental in getting freedom for India. So by your logic, if I insult a congressman then it means I insult freedom fighters right?
on 16 Mar 2006 at 1:44 pm # rajesh
that was nice, think u left out subramaniam swamy.
btw, its time that we hindu’s unite and spread the message of these CHEAP POLITICAL OUTFITS WHO CLAIM TO BE SECULAR. everybody knows that our YELLOW LEADER takes care of all rahugalam and yamagandam b4 doing things. but one thing is for sure,
time and again, people like ad shankara, ramakrishna paramahamsa , swami vivekananda had come and rejuvenated hinduism. None has created our sanatana dharma nor none can destroy it !!!!!!!

Talking about the Hindu it is not the 19th or 20th century Hindu which fought for freedom - it is now a red rag which favours a known circle of people - people with red leanings, Amartya Sen, Arundhati Roy, Medha Patkar, Surjeet, Yechury the Karats, V.R. Krishna Iyer and the Harvard Joker Swamy - you will sure find one of them in the Daily whatever nonsense they say — so recommend a Redstar Noble Award for the Hindu

ok, when we talk of pseudo secularists we should also talk about pseudo religionists who are the actual problem of our society and give fodder for pseudo secularism to grow

=> Sorry dear. As long as you read TH with a hawk eye looking for mistakes, these things will be lost on you. No paper covers the concerts as elaborately as TH. Gowri Ram is very much the current generation and writing since 80s. Somewhere in my blog is a pic of Ram with Ravikiran. TH still releases their music almanac with all those pics from yesteryear.
If that is the case, you shouldnt blame the congress party since they were instrumental in getting freedom for India
Those 2 areas may raise the BP of some, for me it’s the opp. as I find them amusing.
===> Oh plzzz, dont drag this in!! I am not interested in politics or religion or politicising or ‘religionizing’ anything. Both are crap and as an IT guy living 15 hrs in a cubicle, have no grand dreams of revolutionizing a country of 1 billion in these areas
Hindu unity is a myth - it can grow only by building bridges between the moderates and radicals. As long as some loose cannons self-appoint themselves as its custodians, the contradictions will grow. The Taliban, LTTE tried that among their people and ended up as jokers.

to thetalkativeman-
the old hindu is finito sir. perhaps you dont know that even die hards are switching. it is becoming more and more of a left wing/ dmk (due to family concerns) rag. things are so bad that hindu sales agents are calling up people to find out why they are switching.
what do you mean by “patronizing” carnatic music ? i dont think the hindu sponsors many events even during the december season. the main sponsors / patrons are saregama records, nalli, rmkv, and worldspace this past year. n murali is the president of music academy.
has the hindu contributed to renovation work for lesser sabhas ? nalli contributed to krishna gana sabha and the kanchi mutt renovated the rr sabha.
sir, did you know that the carnatic music festival is blacked out on sun tv ? i mean the entire december season is blacked out. it is surreal. if you watched only sun tv, you would not even know that this festival is taking place. the hindu and the dmk family are so close the you wont find a single anti-dmk slanted article in the hindu.
sorry sir you are barking up the wrong tree. we too were hindu subsribers for over 40 years, but now switched to a down-to-earth paper deccan chronicle. yeah ! this paper is a rag, at least it is not pretentious.

Mr.Vivek, since by your own admission you have given up on TH, it would be pointless for me to re-invent the wheel. Just google for “Gowri Ramnarayan” followed by “Carnatic” and check the results.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%22Gowri+Ramnarayan%22+%22carnatic%22
I stand by my statement that nobody covers the carnatic circuit as much as TH does. I’m not worried who sponsors and who does not. 1000s of factors go into that. I’m just the end-user and my only concern is whether what the coverage of my interests(sport and the arts) is professionally done.
We’re talking about a newspaper and to say that TH’s coverage of music and sport is unmatched for decades, with the nearest competitor a few light years away, is passe.
Ferrari, while your optimistic obituary insertion adds to the fun-ride, ever noticed this in the Indian Express site last 3 weeks? Watch the space for more.

thetalkativeman,
Let me tell you one thing. I dont understand how you can equate Indian Express to Slimes. I read IE daily. The main section doesnt contain any sleazy items. And items you mentioned didnt appear on a single day continuously
Ok that apart. In IE you can see criticizim mounted against BJP too. Have you ever seen TH criticizing Communists or DMK? Or dayanidhi maRan?
Ok sir. You are all right. And last but not least. I believe in what I believe. If you dont like it, I cant do anything about it. So be it. the Hindu will always be a shameless propoganda paper of communists with extensive sections on music and sports
on 17 Mar 2006 at 7:06 pm # Cinefan
Ferro,
I agree completely.I have been a reader of The Hindu,The TOI&IE at different periods&believe that the Express is def more objective than any other.Yes,they do give space to a Balbir Punj&a Gurumurthy(whose articles by the way are damn good) but are ruthless in their criticism of the Sangh Parivar when required. Can’t say the same about The Hindu though.
on 17 Mar 2006 at 7:09 pm # Cinefan
BTW thetalkativeman(you post on Bala’s blog too right?),
I never read those articles which you say appeared on the IE site in newsprint.
on 17 Mar 2006 at 7:22 pm # janu_nats
well, what started as a joke seems to have turned into a serious matter. whether Hindu is a pro-dmk paper or not, all articles in that paper are high class. IE is good only on Sundays, esp. its magazine. The good thing about IE is that they use catchy headlines for even simple news items which make u read them even if they arent worth reading. Politics apart, there’s no comparing the Hindu with any other paper bcoz it has class, language and reliable news, offers variety and ofcourse unbeatable crosswords daily.
on 17 Mar 2006 at 8:57 pm # thetalkativeman
Cine Fan,
Just look carefully at Pick Of The Sections, Star Trek, People & Lifestyle and you might wonder if IE hasnt overtaken the Slimes already!
I cant google for all those links. But check these out - all of these are in the last 50 days(new business strategy?). Just check these 4 and you will understand that all those articles *DID* appear. Wait a day or two and IE will surely put up more

During my student days, half the class(all GRE aspirants) went for TH just for the language. How does dogma matter to coll students, given that IE’s std of English is no better than Rapidex? janu nats summarised it.

why does some one read a newspaper ?
1. For good english.
2. For g r e
3. For solving crossword.
4. For music and sports section.
Wow. Keep them coming.

* aka thetalkativeman,
You don’t seem to understand that ANYTHING else is fine and the fact remains that we hate TH and everything associated with it (whether the associations are real or perceived is immaterial).
Go on, give us 100 more links. We won’t look at ‘em. A newspaper can support ANY party, covertly or overtly, but not THEM ["support" here may be real or perceived again]….
P.S: TH carry their prejudice even in the classifieds and weather sections, if you didn’t know, and you’re talkin about the music and sports section!!!
on 18 Mar 2006 at 6:31 am # Bala (Karthik)
And *,
On a VERY different note, the football coverage in TH sucks these days
on 18 Mar 2006 at 10:26 am # Cinefan
Hmmmmm,The standard of English in TH is def good compared to that of IE.Why even the quality of paper they use is very high.Their review of music is good though I would not say the same about the Sports section now.But the point is I always found a drabness in their reporting(This was 20 yrs back when I was a 10yr old without ideologies :)).Now the blind left slant has added to the misery.
Opinions differ but I will take a IE anyday.
on 18 Mar 2006 at 10:40 am # F e r r a r i
Bala and Cinefan,
How dare you people say Sports Coverage in TH is bad eh? Wait. Our Talkativeman will fish out some links of N Ram with Pele, Schumacher, Sampras etc and disprove the fact

“On a VERY different note, the football coverage in TH sucks these days”
“Their review of music is good though I would not say the same about the Sports section “
Bala, Cine Fan,
They came out of their closed mindset and got in Rohit Brijnath of their ex-rival Sportsworld/India Today, maybe they’re waking up to the fact that they arent as good as they were. Yes for football they dont have a Mohan or Shekhar but atleast they are sticking to one average guy unlike other papers who make different dishes from the same cook. Drabness is there because they are known to sweep controversies under the carpet, which is why their journos are always close to the players. Only once they were in trouble when Azhar got pissed off by what Gavaskar wrote in a column, but otherwise they monitor closely what they print. They used to publish my letters in ‘97 a few times, but when I wrote that Afridi looks very suspect and supported Simpson’s move to monitor Asians, of course they never printed it
Definitely there is a drop in the sports section. TH keeps specialists for each sport and really invests on them like no other - Nirmal Shekhar said he’s been covering atleast 2 of the Grand Slams each year since 1981, and this means for the most part, there wont be a single indian playing. When R.Mohan was there, he was the blue-eyed boy of the Indian selectors, often he was asked to cover zonal games in their place and was quite an influential guy. I strongly feel that good language is a must for a reporter, there are times when the significance and depth of something can only be conveyed by the pro - we all know the difference between Harsha and Srinath in the comm box, dont we?
It’s a bit disappointing that after Mohan’s matchfixing ouster, current test matches are covered by S.Dinakar, now he was one typical Rapidex Guy in his early days
