Set the boundary conditions. That will be easier. One of the things I learned to do properly after coming here is in giving directions. US being what it is in terms of driving distances and landmarks, what I usually end up saying is “Go past X landmark for about 5 mins (note we give driving distances in the US more as a function of time than distance in miles :-)), bear right at the light (signal), and take a left at Wendy’s/McDonalds/Burger King/or whatever landmark. The house in the third on the street on your right. (This is the best part and what I was talking about in the first line) If you see a Mobil gas station, you’ve gone too far. Idhu eppadi irukku?
i agree. Since i moved from the US about a year ago, i have been unable to understand the directions given to me. I guess mainly bcos ppl create their own language while giving directions.
mmm… thats there. but i hv rarely faced a prb. probably because i follow rules like those of thennavan’s. how else would magix find his way in pouring rain and near pitch darkness.. :-)) (ARR concert)
btw, thennavan… that mobil gas station incident actually happened. someone gave me directions and i was in the passenger seat.. i had been to this friend’s place once and kinda had a vague recollection of landmarks en route. i did see a mobil gas station when we were going, and then told the driver that we might be a bit off. this happened in houston. and instead of going towards sugarland part of houston … we were headed downtown side..!
Lets assume you’re lost. Its quite amusing who you’d choose amongst all the people walking by you to ask for directions. Do you pick slightly older men in their forties or brightly dressed young guys? Asking a woman for directions is out of the question…
