Rang De Basanti - Movie Review
First things first. The movie is worth a watch at the movie hall. We dont get decent movies so frequently.
This review will not contain any spoilers
Bollywood movies are of 2 types predominantly.
1.The johar, chopra type of movies where the heroines wear hand kerchiefs as costumes, with name as pooja, priya etc. And post interval they become the traditional indian nari, play hide and seek with everyone from servant maid till the house pet, whilst waiting for their NRI boyfriend(most probably a guy called prem or raj). And some 2 to 3 marriage songs. mehndi blah blah.
2.Then you have this mumbai underworld don type of movies.
Occassionally good movies like My Wifes murder do seep in. Rang De Basanti could have been one such movie. It comes pretty close to being a pretty good movie.
The movie is about some individuals, how they lead their life and how they react to a particular situation. It is a social subject, and thank god there is no preaching involved!
What was good in the movie
1. The casting and dialogues. The choice of actors is pretty good. Everyone really lived their role. Aamir Khan was his usual best. So was Atul Kulkarni. But the surprise(pleasant ofcourse) was soha ali khan and siddharth. Soha ali khan was amazing throughout the movie. Especially when her guy proposes to her. Very realistic.
2. The movie had very few cinematic things. Like the main characters, being overnight heroes or the artificial pyar found in hindi movies
3. Everyone knows how good the songs are by now. But they have been utilised(not picturised) very well. Similar to Virumandi, here the songs are not separate and are a part of the movie. Pretty good. The second stanza of ‘luka chuppi’ is a testimony to it. Everyone will be watching TV, and suddenly the door bell rings. Waheeda Rehman walks slowly to open the door. The moment she opens the door, the second stanza starts. Looking at who is there, whats there Waheeda slips. Brilliant!!! I dont think Luka chuppi can be picturised any better!
And ofcourse the BGM. Rahman has used Guitar extensively during the flashback. Especially when Aamir Khan is riding the bike, and trying to escape from the people who are chasing him. And when he jumps into the field, the music abruptly changes. Wow. Khalbali tune is recycled at many places, and its neat. And during the end, Rahmans voice can be heard at a distance, without disturbing the main proceedings. Class!
I wish SJ Surya and some other directors, learn a lesson from this movie on how to utilise(again not picturise) the songs.
4. This girl Alice Patten has done a very good job. She is cute, but at the same time doesnt go overboard with her emotions.
5. Cinematography is very nice. Slick and good. Though there is violence at parts of the movies, the camera doesnt focus on the blood but on the expressions of people. Nice.
6. Siddharth. This guy has so much talent. Really a revelation. Never knew he can express so much. Especially in the song ‘Luka Chuppi’. Its easy to relate to the expressions of soha ali khan and waheeda rehman. But Sidharth’s expressions were too good. In this scene, even Aamir pales out in comparison. Wow. This guy has some real stuff. And I sincerely wish he gets the best supporting actor award this year.
7. Direction. Rakeysh MehraMyshra has done a very nice job. A new theme, a new treatment and getting the actors, technicians deliver is really impressive. Good job sir. Looking forward to more such movies from you.
8. Aamir Khan. How many heroes will be ready to be one among the many? Aamir is mndblowing in this movie. Throughout the movie, he is a happy-go-lucky guy. And when he gets emotional, he tries to control his tears in front of alice. But then he fails and bursts out. Too good! So damn natural. Please do more movie Aamir!
What could have been better?
1. Editing. I think the editor over experimented in this movie. Sometimes it is so abrupt, and sometimes it is confusing.
2. Emphasis on the theme. This is the reason, why this movie will not be hailed as a great movie. The theme is good, so is the treatment. But why the theme is portrayed for just some 10 or 15 minutes. The audience hardly get the feel of it. More effort should have been put on it.
3. The 1st half and 2nd half are so different. The transition is not smooth, and is pretty abrupt. Maybe that has to do with points 1 and 2.
Overall, its a good effort by Myshra and his team. Do watch this movie ![]()

There is actually a third category of Hindi movies - Mangal Pandey/Lagaan/Bhagat Singh type. And Bollywood likes to experiment too - as in Paheli / Koi Mil Gaya and fails miserably at that.
And I wonder which Rakesh Myshra you are referring to. Unless I’m much mistaken it’s Rakesh Omprakash Mehra - of MPD films Pvt Ltd.

I watched it on Saturday. Very well made movie. The parallels drawn between the present and the past are thought-provoking. Editing could’ve been a little better, though. Excellent camerawork, shows Delhi in a whole new light.
Siddharth - The kid has talent, he sure can act! He has a lot of screen time in this movie and he delivers.
AR Rahman, Aamir Khan, Atul Kulkarni - Top notch, as always.
Soha Ali Khan is hot, okay?

very good review. yaah we could have enjoyed the movie much more had they shown full songs. all the actors have done well, everyone is too good in one scene or the other. though madhavan had guest appearance, but i feel he is the hero. will this movie bag award for picture as well as songs. hope for the best.

Loved the movie. Just ammmazing!! Aamir has executed his role in the best possible manner right from start to the end. Siddharth was the star of the movie next to Aamir. His hidden talent has been tapped efficiently. Sharman Joshi shines at places and brings in chuckles here and there. Each and every song just gels perfectly with the situation. ARR’s BGM in the very opening was brilliant. Me felt the pace of the movie abruptly changes in the 2nd half and everything happens in a racy manner.
The Legend of Bhagat Singh thread has been used in the most effective manner. The movie is definitely worth a watch.
Excellent review Prabhu! Can’t agree more with you. And am planning to watch it again

Ferro.
Your review corroborates with the feeling that most of my friends who returned after watching the movie. I have not seen it yet. Maybe I would see it when the VCDs/DVDs come out. With a 5 month daughter, I cannot manage to go to the theatres. But, I cannot wait to see the movie also! Let me post my review once I get to see the movie.
BTW, one of my friends felt that the movie may not find a buy-in from B and C centers. Any comments?

I am not that much of a movie buff nor an analyst. So I really have no clue how you decide about this A B C centre success
