Enough folks! Enough of cricket. Right from the parliament, till the person selling pani puri at road side every one seems to have an opinion! Is it all worth it?
How much time is wasted for cricket? Everyone keeps saying that cricketers dont do the job properly! Touch your conscience and say, how many days you have bunked school/college/office for cricket! Or open the cricinfo browser for entire duration of match. Are you doing your job/duty?
What right do you have to accuse someone else of not doing their job? I know why it goes unnoticed. Its because even the bosses are fans of cricket!
And does it stop there? Mails, phone calls to discuss on what should have been done, what shouldnt have been done! Remember, if you are given the pink slip or fail in the exam, NDTV wont come to your house and debate whether the organisation/university should have given you a graceful exit!
Its nice to be passionate about the game you follow. But you should be able to control your feelings so that it doesnt take over your life. I know of friends who become foes just because of this game!
Wouldnt it be better if you watch the game and enjoy it, instead of debating and arguing till eternity? For instance if I put up a blog post saying that Dhanraj pillay will make a good pinch hitter and send him at No 3, 20 people will agree to me, 200 people will be against. And the discussion will go on and on! Ridiculous!
Stop this crap and get on with your life! There are better things to do than debating and arguing!

How can Dhanraj Pillay become a pinch hitter at #3?
Egjaampil kodukarthaa irundhaalum poruthamaa kodu.
Did you mean Irfan Pathan? If yes, how can you call him a pinch hitter when he shows signs of a proper batsman with a great technique?
If you meant sending Dhoni as #3, I would say that it should not be on a regular basis and only when required. Dhoni can be useful lower order finisher.
Btw, what do you guys think of Ganguly’s exclusion and how Bengal reacted to it?
Did Jaffer merit a selection?
What about retaining Gambhir even after 3 consecutive failures?
Btw, did you see that Laxman, Pathan & Dhoni rescued India from 92/5 to 398? Wasn’t it a great double ton by Hodge today?
Do you think the Proteas can save the test match with just 8 more wkts in hand and 430 more runs to get?
Do you think Ponting delayed the declaration for Hodge to get to this double ton? Was it a right decision? What if it backfires and Aussies ran short by 10 odd overs with 1-2 more wickets to get tommorrow?

Hi Ferrari,
Debating and arguing is the only thing that we are consistently good at and you are asking us to stop it.
Have you not heard of the tamil phrase “Vaayala Vada Sudarathu”. Do you think we have ever achieved anything better than that.

Hey Ferrari, would you agree (or argue?!) with me if I say girls are better off in that aspect? (Generalizing based on majority) They don’t argue/waste time on sports..

Cricket is a game of fools – this observation is not mine but borrowed from what I had read way back in the fifties!! It was written that ‘cricket is a game in which one fool throws the ball, one fool hits the ball, ten fools chase the ball and hundreds of fools watch the ball’. Those more knowledgeable than me can certainly clarify who the author of this piece is. In today’s scenario, some more line needs to be added – ‘and millions of fools conduct research on the ball as to why it has lost its shape or why its seam should face in a certain direction or how it should be polished to retain its spinning characteristics’.
Apart from the ball, the leg also plays a major role in any cricket game.
There is a square leg, a fine leg, a long leg, a deep fine leg. And then there is the leg slip, leg gully and the leg glance. Of course, the most terrible of the legs is the ‘leg before wicket’. As it is, the batsman’s complete body is before the wicket – but, the reason as to why only the leg is singled out for unfair treatment needs to be studied. In fact, this single subject has spawned a large number of cricket accessories like stump cameras, third umpires, animation sequences of how the ball traveled, how the leg did not respond etc..
Thanks to TV, we have discovered that cricket is not only about legs but about balls as well. It certainly is an educative medium. Yes – it has helped all of us to acquire more knowledge. Unfortunately, they are still not able to predict as to which opening combination will click. Or whether our lovable cricket heroes have switched their preferences to roasted chicken legs rather than long legs and square legs.

do u think we havent improved?? we have improved leaps and bounds.. with the minority ppl who really care for the nation, who have vision, we have come a lot way, we have achieved so many things (we are now in a position to make our own aircrafts…..) just that there are so many of ppl who mistook the meaning of living life passionately

I heard that the US-returned bugger who is the manager at one of my previous companies has installed a large plasma screen in the break room so that the hard working Janata there can relax there by watching cricket matches. Seriously this guy tries to be be cool, but fails every time.
While I broadly agree with what you are saying, I have noticed that even cricket freaks don’t track matches as much when they have some real work to do -It’s only when there is no work, or the mgmt fails to identify and allocate work, this happens. After spending considerable time in this industry I have stopped getting worked up about Junta slacking off a bit, because I have come to know how much daylight robbery is going on in the mgmt. One of the IT companies in Chennai spends 80% of it’s monthly budget on the salaries of the top 6 people. My friend is an accountant there.
Whenever you get frustrated by folks slacking off, try to get some inside dope on mgmt and how much kollai aduchufying is going on there - no wait, that’s going to get you worked up all over again

Ferro…
Is it just cricket? Ours is a Cricket crazed country. Ok. If we really look, then we are talking about cricket crazed people. They number so much that they form the majority in our country. Let us take people like you. You spend quite some time watching, following, theorizing, commenting etc etc about Football, F1 and probably Tennis. If this were to be a nation like Brazil that was Football crazed - like you… would you have made the same comment?
BTW.. fellow cricket lovers! India posting 398 a.o. from 97/5 on day 1 was the 3rd best recovery in test matches… Check this link from Rediff.

I second BreakingNewsBalaraman on this. Resource planning is what Indian companies lack in. What we don’t lack is, PM’s who don’t know how to say No. I hear a lot of techies complain about working late, but did you spare a thought on why thats happening. I know that inefficiency is one reason, but the major reason is that PM’s think that they can drive their employees and cut margins by employing two people for 80 hrs a week when they actually need 4 @ 40 hours. No client here in America is going to say, hey, work late. No, they never do that. But they go by what the Indian PM’s accept and thats where the problems lie. So when one team in the company is working day in and day out on a project, few other teams are practically jobless when some of their skill sets could be used. But again, thats a problem with “Time and Material” projects, like the ones that Indian companies work on. And thats again because we are almost always service oriented as opposed to overseas companies that aim to build product catalogs.
Oru chinna cricket matter kku ivalo project management fundas kudthadhu thappu dhaan, but it reflects on how close these two things (i.e. cricket and project management) are close to my heart.

I used to tell the same to my friends and they started seeing me as ignorant to the joys of the world.
Long back (5 years earlier) I even wrote an angry letter to ToI who in their supplement carried a piece which was an organised debate among college youth - over Indian cricket selection, I mean is there not something else college youth should-could focus on?
For heavens sake, God only knows the time, productivity, life lost in the name of cricket.
I for only only follow the results but make it a point never to watch complete game. I have my life to live.
So much more to say…will make this a post of mine sometime later.

cellvi,
That was a good one
Breaking News Balraman,
Lets save this for some other time
aNTi,
I wont blame the management. In my case, I ask my team members if the estimate is ok for them. Whether they are comfortable. Then I add little bit buffer and finalise the plan. I tell the date when i want the deliverable. Thats it. Its upto them to slog for 3 days finish everything and relax for remaining duration. Or work 8.5 hrs a day and give by stipulated time! But from my experience I have seen productivity taking a big hit when someone tries to work in parallel and follow sports or blogs
The quality drastically comes down. That is the problem with the individual and not the management!
T&M and Fixed Price Projects are decided based on various factors. Generally it would be profitable for a company to take up development projects as fixed price and maintenance projects as T&M. And dont think its so easy to convince the customer for T&M

RC,
I follow many a sports. Yes. But I dont debate/argue endlessly whether ferrari should have gone for the harder compund or the softer compund. Nor do I have extended mailing sessions on whethe Jose Mourinho should stick to 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 combination. I realish and enjoy the game. And the brilliance of the players. It starts there and ends there. Ofcourse I get disappointed when my favorite team loses. But thats what sport is all about right? No point throwing tar paint at the players houses, or jeering your own team!
Maybe I would have followed cricket, if I was born in brazil!

Proof enough that you follow those 2 sports deep enough. Any layman is not even going to bother to know these fundas that you have mentioned.

BTW, thanks to the discussion between you and aNTi … got to know some more differences between T&M and FC projects.. kewl! Maybe you should start a PM category!
on 20 Dec 2005 at 11:16 am # aNTi
Ferrari: Ya i know.. It is tough selling T&M projects to customers. But a lot of companies specialize on just that. And btw, I blamed only those managers, who, after getting a right estimate of the number of hours required to finish a project, try to get it done for less. Good to know that you, as PM are doing things the right way.
