By now every one must have heard about this horrible rape and murder of a call centre employee in bangalore.
The driver is married and his wife is six months pregnant. I sincerely hope that this guy is hanged to death. And hopefully no human rights jokers intervene !
People will talk about this for a month and forget it. I feel irrespective of the measures taken by government every girl child should be trained in self defence. This must start in the school itself. And companies should give some basic training itself to employees. Like carrying knife chilli powder or some spray etc.
It is really sad that something like this happened. And media should be sensitive to the family members feelings. They are poking into the family and trying to get some news bits from them. Very bad!
Anyways why will anyone be bothered. We have a subject of national importance which is going to be discussed in parliament. Yeah. Sourav Ganguly issue. Right ?
on 17 Dec 2005 at 10:23 am # rsubras
damn rite u r prabhu….. girls must be taught in their tender age itself how to safeguard themselves….. self defense techniques should form one of the compulsory syllabus for them…….
also the family of the girl should be spared by media…. media ppl go to any limits to collect sensational news from the already hurt family and inflict pain on them more than the whole episode would have actually made
my honest and sincere condolences to that girl and may GOD please be kind and safe on their family
regarding the punishment, i dont think hanged to death is the right punishment for such crime…u have also mentioned he has a family rite…. my punishment wud be just to remove his organs and let him go make a living..such guys shud live and suffer the living imho
on 17 Dec 2005 at 1:21 pm # Arunachalam
I fully agree with rsubras. Death penalty is not apt for the criminal driver. His organ has to be cut & he has to live to endure the agony & suffering because of that. This I recommend not because he has a family but because he has done such a crime in a pre-planned & diabolical way due to his sexual urge. Hence I feel this kind of punishment only is apt for his crime.
I dunno what an “Anniyan” would have meted out as a punishment since I have not read Garuda Puranam.
on 17 Dec 2005 at 1:51 pm # Muthu
Police and NASCOM have asked the employers to provide security. In this case, the employer arranged a driver to drop late shift girls and the driver whose job is to protect the girl used the situation to his advantage.
I would punish him by removing the organs and have him spend 2/3 of the time in strip clubs…

The company has decided that male employess would be the first pickup and last drop.
But as long as women can defend themselves, this cannot be a good solution

Hello ?
Why do we have bizarre responses like “kill him” and “cut his dick off” ? Educated adults, anybody ?
The real problem is that rape cases, like a million others, take far too long and end up being a trial of the victim. Else there are harsh enough provisions in the law. And the death penalty is no guarantee of crime reduction, as has been proven innumerable times.
In this case, rather than keeping male employees as first pickup/last drops (how FUCKING sexist and inane), they coulda done a much simpler thing like say, keeping an open radiolink/mobile line for the damn vehicle and monitoring it from the office.
on 17 Dec 2005 at 7:31 pm # Rubic_Cube
Right said, Ferro.
I second “?!” in being against corporal punishments like cutting off the dick. Much the same that I oppose Middle East’s Islamic Law based governance or Singapore’s governance. Both are advocacies of corporal punishments - which at times is too much.
However, a death penalty seems appropriate in this context. More because of the cold blooded nature of this crime. Impersonation, Criminal Intent…
This has been an issue of constant debate between me and some friends - as to the security assurance of the call center employees and the credibility of drivers.
Some days back, when me and my wife were talking about bringing up our daughter, teaching self defence was a definite point on our agenda. Karate or Judo or something similar. And a few days later, we see an incident like this happening. The case for teaching self-defence is now stronger.
Now, beyond giving punishments and teaching self-defence, I also am seeking to understand the unknown parts of the scenario. What could have driven the man to commit this heinous crime. Probably he has no other police record and has been living a normal life till this point. He is married and his wife is pregnant - 6 months you said. Probably - sexual gratification is one reason. If he cant find it at home, he is finding it elsewhere. Why the criminal way? Asserting his male authority? Probable.
Above all, what I am going to say now is probably not possible or it would take ages… That society should be educated to treat each other human being with respect and love (Why do I hear laughs of sarcasm here?). Spiritual upliftment which deals straight with the mind is the sure answer. But this can only be achieved by providing more basic necessities. Know that hierarchy triange in that theory by Maslow? Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory. That is what I am referring to.
Finally, it takes an incident like this to shake things up. Security will be ramped up. The process will be made more fool proof (impossible to make it perfect). But then, this is India. There is always a loose link in the chain. Someone in the loop will just pass something on and such incidents may result.
And yes - Discussion on Saurav in the parliament? It appears as a headline on the front page. Me and my wife were laughing out loud. As if there is nothing more important. Stupid fanatics. Waste of time by today’s youth who could probably do something better. Its a waste talking about these wastes of society.
Infact I hate very young guys doing the job of a watchman. Some beggars are just young enough to do something better in their lives. These young people should actually do something more productive, like working in industries. Our employment board should deal with these issues. Again… with the scale of corruption that is so rampant in our nation, hrmmppphhh!
I GIVE UP, MAN!!
on 17 Dec 2005 at 7:38 pm # Rubic_Cube
Hey! I am not finished. I also hate programs like Indian Idol, Naach Baliye and all those sorts of absolute nonsense that is setting a very wrong precedent amongst today’s youth. That it is cool to just not concentrate on studies and contribute to social and national upliftment. I also hate metal rock bands. Headbanging. Just what sort of expression is that? Waste of time, energy and everything else. Just aping the west. Do we really seek to move that way? I know many of your blog readers are going to throw flak on me. I dont mind. I hold my views…
on 17 Dec 2005 at 7:43 pm # Arunachalam
Bizarre crimes have to be dealt with a bizarre response only. In that respect Muslim/Arab nations show the way. The punsihment should be meted out in such a way that he can’t even think of repeating the crime. It will also send out a clear message to other murky minded criminals in waiting. Here, “neither here nor there” kind of trial/punishment will not help.
on 17 Dec 2005 at 7:54 pm # Rubic_Cube
Was watching the headlines channel when something struck me - and it has not been made evident in the news article.
Q: How did this phoney driver have the contact number of Pratibha? Isnt there a case for information leak?
on 17 Dec 2005 at 9:59 pm # Sujith
Read the news yesterday.Heart wrenching. No use telling what the government should do or shoud’nt do.Its in any case gonna take atleast one year. Heard about the marine drive rape case where a constable raped a girl? Even after inviting as much media attention as it did, the case is still largely unsolved.A recent stat shows that the rape of minors is on the rise. You tell about educating women?Whadya do when people start raping 2 and 3 year old girls?Sexual frustration dude.It doesnt have a cure.Just one of those times when you feel like hanging your head down and resigning yourselves to fate.Am just too sorry women hafta go through whatever they hafta.Just too heart wrenching.

Nice of you to write about this Ferrari.
?! - IMO, the death penalty is not for crime reduction but for the victims family to get a closure. You are really naive enought to think that imprisonment is going to turn him into a new leaf? People dont go back to crime after they get out of the prison? Life imprisonment is not for life and even if it was, he is going to breathe and eat and bully or make one or more persons lives miserable inside the prison and what do the victims family get? Is this Justice?
on 17 Dec 2005 at 11:18 pm # Praveen
Very true Ferrari. I saw that piece of news too and couldn believe it.
A rapist’s organs need to be removed i guess…i don see anything else discouraging them…especially the %@#%$#@% who sexually assault kids! That’s an extremely pitiable state. They deserve such punishments. What excuse can one give for abusing a gal in UKG?? Vivek sollara maadhiri Minor-a suda vaendiyathu dhaan!
?!,
Radio monitoring? With that the guys at the office will know something is wrong and by the time somebody reaches there the rape would have taken place. Then the driver would be arrested and taken to court. Thats what happens anyways!
on 19 Dec 2005 at 9:06 am # Ram
Prathiba is lost forever, and to prevent future happenings - do not have ladies on the night shift, and if there is no other alternative, provide them resting facilities at the office itself, so they can return home at or after dawn — establish wireless communication between the Security office and the vehicle, with the driver reporting locale, every now and then –
And why the more civilised word ‘bobbitting’ has not been used by the bloggers?
on 19 Dec 2005 at 11:01 am # Prabha
hi…that was a shocking incident. And as you say the newspaper reports were trash.
Anyways i sincerely hope this guy gets his punishment. And to be on the safer side its better not to stay back late at work.if u can avoid it.

Besides just teaching martial arts - gals should be taught to strike back - to be confident in striking back and not to have a panic attack - knowing martial arts is different from being able to handle such situations
most victims are normally the more reserved type as they will fear striking back - and rape is but a power game it has nothing to do with urges
im seconding death - life imprisonment doesn’t make a difference - they’re just gonna come out and do the same - such cases have happened before
on 19 Dec 2005 at 12:25 pm # Maverick
Let’s talk about this issue and this issue alone. Stopping ‘Nach Baliye’ and ‘Indian Idol’ are not what we need. Probably, we might need to shut out the entire entertainment industry and that includes all blogs which are not socially relevant (movie reviews, song lyrics..). So, thats not the way to react !!
Politicians talking about cricket team selection - Well…thats bullshit !!! This country has a lot more important issues than that to talk about!!
Going by what has happened, I don’t even think twice to suggest capital punishment for this guy!! Come up with whatever reasons you have, this guy needs to be punished in such a way that every other evil element in the society should remember this whenever they even get an idea of doing it in future. If all those safeguard measures could avoid such incidents in the future, well and good !!!

Teaching self-defence, capital punishment, radio-monitoring, etc. will reduce such incidents in future. As rubic_cube says, until the mindset is cleansed, there is no permanent solution. There is one way to prevent it. When we know the society is not safe yet, why trust it?!
A husband/father/brother/friend should take the responsibility of dropping her. This can sound a li’l absurd, but definitely is a fool-proof solution. Even a simple act of her husband dropping her at a nearby colleague’s place would have prevented it. yeah, its lotta inconvenience. But which is important? safety or sleep?
Again, those who are staying alone, don’t have this luxury.
I was really surprised when this thought struck me.. I have feministic views and have driven home alone at wee hours. I grumbled when mom complained about it. But now, we’ve lost Sarika, Stephanie & Prathiba and still nothing has been done. It is quite scary!
In this case, this definitely is a planned, schemed, cold blooded murder! I am sure he came prepared to counter her self-defence as well.

As yadhvi has pointed out its not always possible for relatives to drop or pick up somebody..what abt girls who stay away from home.and its not fool proof.A group of rowdies could also attack u when u r goin with ur husband or father. Its not safe either way.And men could get attacked too. What about the guy who was found murdered in Koramangala few months back?
There should be better police protection at nights. And i think, be it anybody men or women we should carry something to protect ourselves.

What if that guy gets an organ transplant. Rape is not the only crime he commited! He murdered someone. He needs to be hanged to death!

I agree with most of your comments. Though I have my own reservations about Indian Idol and fashion shows, I wont attribute that to this.

Death Penalty absolutely! Immediately after judgement is delivered. No point prolonging the case too!
yadhvi,
What if the hudband is working in some other direction, at the same time! But I agree with your point. Only YOU have to take care of yourself! Thats the sad part in current world!

Thats a handy thing for women to have!

Yadhvi/Prabha
I read the girl’s husband is also employed in some BPO & he was at work when she boarded the van. Companies should think of an armed escort (man or woman) in vans feerying employees during 10 PM to 6 AM. May be they can also look at woman drivers (excorted by an armed woman guard) for vehicles carrying woman employees. Of course, it is always better if some self-defence technics are taught/learnt by such employees.
Prabhu - For such an organ transplant, first he has to find a donor of such an organ. Fortunatley, GOD has not blessed mankind with a spare one.
on 19 Dec 2005 at 5:11 pm # prabukarthik
Death penalty abslutely correct for this case. but more importantly it shud be done
when the public has this issue in memory not long after my grandson is born.
And all this providing armed escorts stuff… why are we trying to find a ‘fool proof process/systems’ all the time? why cant we acept that there is no such thing?
Pray, what an armed escort will do?
And how do we ensure he does that?
Sign another ledger?
And dont tell me he will surely be nice, and honest and all that. And btw even this driver was supposed to be a driver.
Girls shud be taught how to defend. Heck its even important for guys….
But then India will not be what it is if we did important things first rather than urgent ones…
on 19 Dec 2005 at 5:46 pm # Uma
As long as the parliamentarians are debating the important stuff like cricket, India will shine
on 19 Dec 2005 at 6:36 pm # Arunachalam
The immediate measure(s) which can be done at the company/individual level (without depending too much on Govt) is providing armed escort/woman driver/self-defence etc. I agree it may not be a totally fool-proof system but definitely a better one than what it is now. And it can happen in “our” day rather than “grand children” days. Obviously, any system has to work on trust - whether it is an escort/driver. If they happen to be women, at least rape will not happen.
on 21 Dec 2005 at 3:09 pm # JenRaj
It was really shocking to read this news! Poor Prathiba. Looked like the other girls whom that driver called were shrewd enough to cross check with the company while Prathiba wasn’t. I wish in future companies avoided picking up or dropping a girl “alone”. There is no strict solution to the problem but something has to be done to stop this nonsense. I think of the numerous fathers and mothers of girls who would be so tensed if their daughter went to work at night from now on… I rememeber a review on AIDS in vikatan “Westerners accept that they are not moral, this is a problem and hence try to solve the problem, but we say we are moral and hide the obvious and thereby nursing a rotting wound!”
on 21 Dec 2005 at 9:10 pm # sailu
Very very unfortunate incident.I agree with you that every girl child should be taught self-defence and honestly it should be included in the school curriculum and made complusory.
on 24 Dec 2005 at 2:00 am # Alwin
Will a capital punishment put an end to such a heinous act? Or is this the first ever rape case in the Indian history? Look in a broader perspective to put an end to all such crimes. Also removal of human organs for the person committed the crime is highly impractical in a country like India. Ladies should be trained to defend themselves. They dont have to be specialist in martial arts. All they need to know is the basic techniques that can make the criminals stumble for a while which can give room for them to escape from the scene. This can atleast bring down the crime rates to an extent. Even its a slow progress but this would be an effective method when considering a long term results.
Weeping or mourning will never solve a problem. Fight Back.
Alwin.
