i heard the name of the town bangalore originally was bendha kaaLooru = vendha kadalai oor. it was then a famous town for boiled groundnut sales or something like that and hence got the name.
mangalore = mangala-ooru named after presiding deity mangalaambiga. even now keralites call mangalore as mangalapuri (you can hear that even in the kerala railway station announcement in malayaaLam).
I’ll tell you where all this comes from. The Kannada lobbyists is working overtime now in their demand to make Kannada as one of the classical languages. With the recent rule that the language should have a 1500 year old history to be called as a classical one, the Kannada lobby is finding it difficult to stake claim as they themselves admit that they do not have enough clinching evidence to prove it thought they have a few bits & pieces of data that is 1500 years old. With the classical status demand getting some momentum, it would not look like if the state capital’s name itself is not in the native language. This name change is also in the same direction.
Prabhu,
it’s Bengal-oo-ru, I hear. U R Ananthamoorthy has corrected the CM’s statement that it’s not Bengaluru. I read this in today’s paper.
