Rang De Basanti - Music Review
This is the 1st ARR Album I am buying after buying the Bose speakers
I dont have any music knowledge. And I have zero knowledge when it comes to the technicalities of the composing and all. You will definitely find better reviews of the musical album. But one thing for sure. This review is from the bottom of the heart of a die hard AR Rahman fan.
1. Ik Onkaar
This is kind of a prayer song. By the time you get into the mood, the song gets over.
2.Rang De Basanti
Title track. The one thats been appearing in the trailers. One of the few ARR songs that hooks you on the first hearing itself. Was bit skeptical about Daler Mehndi. But that was highly unnecessary. He has done a good job. Am sure this song is going to stay in the dance floors of all pubs for quite sometime. Really peppy song. It does lift your spirits! I would suggest you not to listen this while driving in the city
But a must listen while going on long drive. Full josh song!
3. Paathshala
Well. What do I say? I suggest you to listen to this song first in the CD. Oh man! Especially the percussion.Naresh Iyer has done a pretty good job. If you love drum beats then THIS is the song that you will keep on hearing for some time to come. This song has modern lyrics.
Lose Control
I am a rebel
Na koi padhnevala, na koi sikhne vala
apni to paatshaala, masti ki paatshala
And in the middle guitar piece. Wow. It silently sneaks in somewhere in the middle and same way disappears. And in the end of the song, you hear engine sounds. Engine revving. Not normal engines. A Ferrari or BMW Sports car kind of engine revs. And the best part is at the end of the song, the chorus just transforms to a police siren. Well. When does it transform? Was it the police siren only from beginning? Repeated hearings should tell
And what I considered the end was not the actual end
One random beat reappears.
(In case you havent rushed to buy the CD/Cassette continue reading)
4.Tu Bin Bataye
The combination of Madhushree and Naresh Iyer once again after ‘Mayilirage’. Its a slow and romantic song. Actually the only romantic song in the album. Is it for Soha Ali Khan and R.Madhavan? If Madhushree sticks to just hindi songs, she will definitely win more fans. Actually am bit disappointed why ARR didnt use flute in this song.In fact no flute in the entire album
Ideal song for Naveen’s flute. Nevertheless a very sweet and cute song. And the lyrics suggest that the lovers are missing each other.
tu bin bataye
mujhe le chal kahin
jahaan tu muskuraaye
Meri manzil vaahin
Naresh Iyer comes pretty late at the song. But makes his presence felt very well.
5. Khalbali
I dont know how many people will agree to me. But, this is my favorite song in the album. Especially the way Rahman sings it. A different dimension to Rahman’s voice.I wish some one with technical knowledge to explain it. Try to use the accelerator and brake at same time. His voice is moving, and at same time stopping. You get what I mean? Its so catchy. There are some arabic verses in the middle. Especialy the guy singing ziddi ziddi ziddi takes me to a different planet altogether. The second longest song in the album. And in some part of the song(from 04.23 to 04.33) I hear sounds like udukkai(Whats the word for udukkai in english?). This song is completely different from a normal song. Its not romantic. Its not fast beat song. I dont know what to call it. But am hooked to it.
6. Khoon Chala
Is Mohit chauhan a new singer? Or he has sung before? He reminds me a lot of Roop Kumar Rathod. I wasnt impressed in the first 2 hearings. Think it has to grow on. And I liked the lyrics of this song a lot
Badan se tapak kar
Zameen se lipat kar
Galiyon se raston se
Ubhar kar, umad kar
(You are still here? I thought you had rushed to buy the CD)
7.Paatshala - Be a Rebel
Blaaze is sure to have millions of more fans after this song
To the mahal of the taj
To the minar of Qutub
To the kumari of Kanya
To the panjim of goa
To the kanchipuram
Zinda-bad Zinda-good
Very tough to choose between the 3rd song and this one
ARR has spoilt his fans for choices ![]()
And at the end of the end a guy hums ah haha ah haha. Thats neat
8.Luka Chuppi
Mom son song. Lata Mangeshkar and AR Rahman have sung together for the first time. Am sure everyone will be reminded of their mom when Lata sings
kahan kahan dhoondha tujhe
thak gayi hai ab teri maa
aaja saanjh hui mujhe teri fikar
Dhundhla gayi dekh meri nazar aa ja na
I am typing this review at around 12 in the night. And when Rahman sings,
kya bataoon maa kahan hoo main
I just want to drop everything, rush to Chennai and lie on my mom’s lap. Sigh! People who stay away from their mom will be to relate to what am saying. The tabla is distinctly audible in this song. But very mildly and pleasantly.
yahaan sab kuch mai maa phir bhi
lage bin tere mujhko akela
I miss my mom
9.Lakaar
This is a narration like what we had in Iruvar. In Iruvar, the narration was a romantic one. Here it is more of an inspriational one. Aamir Khan has narrated it. Guess this comes in some point of movie, when Aamir is trying to inspire his mates. Actually there was a big hype that Aamir has sung in this movie. We cant call it as a song. Its a narration.
Sarfaroshi ka Tamanna
ab hamaare dil mei hai
10. Roobaroo
Have you heard the song ‘Puraani Jeans’? The initial narration reminds me of that. But when ARR starts singing Roobaroo Roshni, it smoothly transforms to a typical farewell song. Ideal song to be sung in college farewell. Actually if am not wrong Roobaroo is sung by naresh iyer and then AR Rahman takes forward from Roshni. Initially I thought it was AR Rahman singing Roobaroo. But then I realised the nice blend. Cool song.
This is a treat for all AR Rahman fans. I am extremely happy with this album. A MUST in your music collection. And another thing I liked in the CD was that lyrics are there for all the songs. I always wondered why many people dont print the lyrics along with the CD Cover. People will enjoy more if they have the lyrics in hand.
After a while, a non period film from AR Rahman.A very different one from others. Songs grow on you pretty fast. Lots of peppy numbers. Really to lift your spirits.
Thank you AR Rahman. Thanks a lot!

a very nice review ferrari
am thinking of buyin it too inspite of the fact my hindi is very much limited to aa..aah..e..ee..
havent seen ur previous reviews prabhu…….but more than several times i am seeing aaha..ohho..besh..besh as the initial review from die hard fans (of any MD for that matter) only to die hard gradually and end as murmur once the film gets released….and when another album gets released, the same fans wud say, the king is back, the king who has disappointed with his earlier film now has returned strongly etc., etc., i hope this review will not peter out like that
hehe i still cannot forget the initial review for parasuram from tfmpage when ppl commented, the album rocks, hit of the century etc……..

Nice review man…. Extensive use of guitar for the first time by ARR. All the songs have either electric guitar or acoustic guitar strummin’n rockin’ !!! The guitar in luka chuppi is amazing…Tabla and guitar… such a exotic combination ! But, I am hooked on Khalbali…never heard ARR singing in this manner.
Great Album and great publicity by Song BGM.
This man is incredible !!! Sure to top the charts in future…

Ferro… been listening to the RDB tracks back to back non-stop. Awesome. Different.
BTW, The “Ik Onkaar” song reminds me of an hymn sung by MSS called “Sri Ranganatha Gadyam”. Dont know why… tune feels vaguely familiar. Especially the sections “sthairya dhairya shaurya parakrama satyakama satyasankalpa krititva…” “prabhudhdha nithyaniyaamya…” parts from the Sri Ranganatha Gadyam have almost the same tune!
The song is wonderful from a spiritual aspect. I got this from some punju site on the web. Its called the Moola Mantra of the sikhs… check it out at this link: http://www.mybenches.com/articles/Shabad. Truly blissful !!!
“Tu Bin Bataye” is as mellifluous as it can only be in imagination. ARR composed it. Divine.
Title Track, Paatshaala and the rap version are a bit loud for my taste. Yuppies would love this one. Move over all existing youth anthems. This one’s gonna rule the charts for a looooong time to come!
The rap one is pretty good. Blaaze feasts on this one. ARR is giving him a very good opportunity and Blaaze is doing more than his best…
“Khalbali” again does not seem to find liking with me. Somehow I dont gel with it.
“Khoon Chala” has got wonderful lyrics. Perfect Ballad. Soulful. Must be a moment of divination and revelation in the movie.
“Lukka Chuppi” - Lata. ARR. What more to say about this song? Cant get better. Guitar strumming in the background is brilliant. Occasional Tabla as a percussion accompaniment is beautifully added. There is a very small flute piece towards the end. Dont know who played it. ARR does not know Hindi. It kinda shows in this song.
“Lalkaar” is serious. It is a narration. Lyrics are brilliant. Something that gives you goosebumps. Makes you rise to your feet and harden yourself. The orchestration only adds to the mood.
“Rubaroo” feels just as “Purani Jeans” like you mention. Naresh seems to take off like Remo Fernandez. He should probably not do that. Guitaring is amazing. Not long before this song gets to the class books of guitar students.
Hmmm… overall good album. Memorable. Which is the song of the album for me? Hmmm… very very very tough choice. Between “Ik Onkaar”, “Tu Bin Bataye” and “Lukka Chuppi” - I think I would choose one each during different situation. Right now, I am overwhelmed by the spiritual tone of “Ik Onkaar”. So its the one for now. Maybe “Lukka Chuppi” once I reach home.

Ferro… 3-4 days later. Lukka Chuppi is my #1 in the album. ARR’s alapanai is brilliant. I recently got a mp3 player - Sandisk Sansa m240 - and I have loaded the songs that I like from this album into the player. Every night, I am listening to this song on repeat mode … and it feels like Mom is crooning me to sleep… Most of the times, I am listening to “Tu Bin Bulaye, Mujhe Le Chal Kahin” & “Lukka Chuppi” and then just close my eyes, rocking on a hammock, enjoying myself, with a zephyr blowing around! Thats what ARR’s music can do for you! Audio-Visual-Imagination. Treat!!

But.. “Luka Chuppi” song alone stands out… That IS vintage Rahman…
on 12 Dec 2005 at 12:50 pm # Maverick
OK…Let me also share my thoughts..
1.Ik Onkar - Harshdeep Kaur
A short prayer song in Punjabi that will take you to the Puja room and brings in the prayer mood straight away.
2.Rang De Basanti - Daler Mehndi, Chitra
A peppy number from the first second till the last. A bhangra number, but not typical. IMO, Bhangra is one kind of folk that as been beaten to death in Hindi movies, Indipop and even regional movies. ARR himself told in an interview recently that Punjabi music has been experimented with too much and reached a saturation. But it takes a genius to come up with a Punjabi bhangra number and still manage to make it sound different from the countless ones on the market. Excpet for the Midival Punditz Bhangra Fever loop (which you might have heard in the Nokia ad), the tune and the composition is fantastic. Daler Mehndi and Chitra make up for a contrasting combination of voices and ARR’s genius manages to infuse a melody into this Bhangra foot-tapper. Would look a little surprising that ARR didn’t opt for Sukhwinder Singh for a bhangra number but on hindsight you would know that Daler was the obvious choice for such a song. With his typical Punjabi folk high-pitched voice he brings in the Punjabi feel to this song and does a good job.
3.Paathshaala (Lose Control) - Naresh Iyer, Mohammad Aslam.
ARR’s songs has a habit to take some time to grow on you. But, not this one. It has got this infectious beat that it starts off with and goes in the background throughout. The shouts of ‘Lose Control’ and the following lines of
‘I am a rebel
Na Koi Padhnewala
Na koi seekhnewala…’
gives you an idea of the situation for this song. It could go on to become a youth anthem. The song lyrics remind me of Pink Floyd’s ‘Another brick in the wall’ and the the tune in the stanzas (from 1:21) reminds me very much of Billy Joel’s ‘We didn’t start the fire’.
ARR’s typical usage of having them singing together with the josh that is required for a youth anthem ( remember ‘Dhakka Laga Bukka’ from Yuva?)is seen here too.
The singers have done a good job and the song pretty much delivers what it is expected to do. A rocking number that you’d put it on loop for the first 2 weeks, atleast.
4.Tu Bin Bataye - Madhushree, Naresh Iyer
The same combo that ARR used for ‘Mayilirage’ in Ah..Aah. After the 2 rocking foot-tappers, this one comes a slow melodious duet. Madhushree starts off the song and you’d find the song starts off pretty slowly and you’d get to hear some great violin pieces in the background picking up pace as the song goes one. Naresh Iyer sings the 2nd stanza and does an equally good job. They both finish it off humming together which I thought was the best part of the song.
5. Khalbali - Nacim, AR Rahman, Mohammad Aslam
Arabic song!!! You’d know it the moment the song starts off with ‘Khalbali a Khalbali’ in the typical way Arabic songs are sung with those phonetic stress on Arabic consonants and that ‘gargling while singing’ effect
The Arabic lyrics are written by the Arabic singer himself. ARR does a good job of singing in Arabic with the required emphasis on the Arabic lyrics. The Hindi lyrics start off at 3:58 and the song moves on in the same groove. Just like one of this Khaleed’s numbers, this song has the potentital to become a big hit in the Middle East charts. Amazing orchestration by ARR and great singing too. After a Punjabi prayer song and a rocking Bhangra followed by a modern rock youth anthem and a lovely melodious duet we had an authentic Arabic song. The album is already showing its versatility and make you look forward to the rest of the tracks.
6. Khoon Chala - Mohit Chauhan
Mohit is an upcoming singer in Hindi movies and even music directed the recent ‘Main Meri Patni Aur Woh’ which seems to be getting all the good reviews. This is a kind of ballad with a sad philosophical tinge to it. I am mightily impressed with Mohit’s rendition of this song and I hope he makes it big and sings more for ARR.
7. Paathshaala - Blaaze, Naresh Iyer, Mohammad Aslam.
Get ready to move your feet on for some head-bangin !! Paathshaala returns with Blaaze doing his own rap in between the original lyrics. The songs pretty much remains the same except for Blaaze’s ‘National unity rap’ :). Look out for the mobile phone beeps that comes in the background once in while which would make you check if I got a SMS everytime it beeps
8. Luka Chuppi - Lata Mangeshkar, AR Rahman
A mother-son duet for which Lata & ARR sing together for the first time. This is a feel-good kind of sing that would bring back memories of your childhood with your mom. Sung with great emotion by Lata (who pretty much sounds like a mom
and who better than ARR to bring out emotions of this song. The song reamins in the same pace throughout and fills you with peace.
9. Lalkaar - Aamir Khan
Not, actually a song. But more of a narration by Aamir Khan. Looks like this is an inspirational piece
‘Sarfarsohi Ki Tammanna Ab hamare dil mein…’
My guess is that it features in the independence struggle episode during the making of documentary.
10. Roobaroo - Naresh Iyer, AR Rahman
This one starts off with a fast guitar piece and brings in the mood of a holiday and a road song. Could visualise Aamir and friends running in the middle of a paddy field with their shirts off with the song playing in the background. Naresh Iyer does most of the singing with ARR joining him to sing ‘Roobaroo…’

HI PRABHU
FWG IS THE REVIEW IN ONE OF THE INTERVIEW WITH ARR ABOUT LORD OF THE RINGS ON 30/1/06 ABOUT NARESH IYER
The soundtrack of RDB also has several other lilting numbers, especially the Rubaroo item song by newcomer Naresh Iyer. Rahman had heard Naresh at a contest organised by Adnan Sami. He remembers that though Naresh did not win, he had left a strong impression on him. “I often tell myself that music is not a race,” Rahman says. “And when Naresh lost by a few points, I said to myself that we should not let him go. I knew he was talented and wanted to give him an opportunity.”
Rahman says he asked the 24-year old singer if he was prepared to come down from Mumbai to Chennai and stay put for several months. “I knew how serious he was when he turned up with his parents in no time,” the composer adds. “They had got him to stay in a house near my studio, and brought him to me saying ‘Now you are in charge of him.’”
Iyer was available for Rahman at any time, night or day. So much so that when Rahman was too tired to sing the Rubaroo number, he got it sung by his new protégé. “I had planned to sing the song later,” Rahman continues. “But Naresh had sung it so well, I decided to keep his version. That is why you hear me sing only a few lines with him.”
Besides, he says laughing, he would not have felt comfortable saying the words, Ai Salaa.

Chill guys!
Being tamilians sure you don’t know about ‘Sarfaroshi ki tamanna’. It is not an old film song..
It is a urdu shairi written by Ram Prasad Bismil…it should be ranked along side Iqbal’s ‘Sare jahan se achha’…but sadly, secularists or rather pseudo-secularists don’t want Bismil to be well-known..

luka chuppi is a great piece of work.eventhough i dont understand hindi launguage, there’s some great attraction to that song.
i eventually browsed the net to find out the meaning over the internet.
both A.R Rahman and Lata Mangeshkar just made the song so perfect…

i loved this film! i watched it last night and cried at the end. this is truly one of the best films ever made in Bollywood. not one of those mushy love stories but a proper story line!
great job.

with Rang De Basanti, AR Rehman proved again his status in Indian Film Industry. Each and every song has a charm and like all AR Rehman Numbers, more you listen more you tend to like it. I still love to hear Taal, Bombay, Dil se and so on. Eagerly waiting for his next release…

Luka Chuppi (Hide-n-seek)
Bohath hui (It’s been enough)
Saamnai aaja na? (Come in front of me, won’t you?)
Kahan kahan dhoondha tujhe (In all of the places I’ve looked for you)
Thak gayi hai ab teri maa (Tired has grown, your mother)
Aaja saanjh hui mujhe teri fikar (Come to me, I’m worried about you)
Dhundhla gayi dekh meri nazar aa ja na (It’s getting dark, come where I can see you, won’t you)

Rubaroo And Paatshala was sung by Naresh Iyer Who Totally Rox!! He has sang many songs.. Not Only In Hindi But In Tamil, Malayam and many others..
