Moral Policing!

Chenthil, Nilu, Kaps, Uma, Amit and many others have already written a lot about this moral policing thing. I dont wish to elaborate more on that.

But I want to ask the experts one thing. Cant we take any action against media?

Everyone knows how people feel about Lalu Prasad Yadav. But still there is a case against him and a FIR was recently registered against him in the fodder scam case.

Cricket, supposed to be the religion in India. Azharuddin was subject to CBI Enquiry when this match fixing scandal happened.

But why the hell cant we take any legal action against media? I remember couple of years back, The Hindu editor and some 4 to 5 people were charged with some case. And what they did? They ran away to bangalore to escape from the police. If they feel that what they did is legal, why cant they boldly face the law?

Now this issue on Park Hotel private party. Imagine. In case this issue wasnt publicized by the media, no one would have actually known about it! I think this is a serious issue. Our policemen have better jobs of nabbing criminals and providing safety to the people. Media is deliberately misleading the police by taking such issues on hand!

Is there no end to it? Instead of targetting the anger towards the police men, I think we should focus on Indian Media.

Please dont pounce on me by giving me the link of Sudhish’s article in The Hindu today. In this park hotel episode Dinamalar might be at fault. But in how many incidents The Hindu has been guilty? Name a newspaper and you will have something that they have done to increase the circulation or sensationalise the issue.

The Park Hotel episode deals with fundamental rights. And we can easily relate to it. But there are so many issues that is equally important to everyone of us, but we dont know the consequences. For instance this Kashmir issue. That the army should withdraw. How much of the facts do we know? Has any newspaper reported this demand by the Hurriyat Conference?

The Mirwaiz said the peace process could not go forward if the ground situation does not improve. He repeated his demands for the release of political prisoners, repeal of draconian laws such as the Public Safety Act, the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and Disturbed Areas Act, dismantling of army bunkers from villages and towns, end to human rights violations, withdrawal of military and paramilitary forces and freedom of assembly, saying they would go a long way to hastening the progress of peace and reconciliation in the region.

Has any of our media reported this? Why?

Why no one files a case against any of the media? Is media above law? I would go one stop forward and say that the major reason for Indias problems is because of the media!

A law should be brought to curb medias freedom. Then definitely things will change for the better. Till then things will be like this. Lets forget the arrow and take a serious look at the bow!!!!

  1. Uma says:

OMG Ferro how many cans of worms are you trying to open in one go? Curtail media freedom? Great idea! Wonderful. Why not have the army take over the country too and stop us all from talking! Why bother with democracy! But i think the Press ought to be answerable to some authority somewhere, and I am sure India must have such an organisation which keeps an eye on the press. I am sure they are answerable, if only we had the guts to question them.

  2. srini says:

park hotel is private owned is a public
place being a hotel…There are guidelines
defined by the govt and the hotel is expected to follow the same…

since they didnt followed, the managers have been arrested.

we are in India and Indian moral needs to be
    followed

  3. No Uma. Am not talking about individuals here. Media is misusing its rights. There should be a slap on the wrists for what they are doing.

India definitely not equal to Media. I dont think Media is doing any value addition to our country.
    1. They fabricate the facts
    2. They sensationalise the issues
    3. They propogate things bad for country
    4. They are hypocrites

And FYI Indian Army has done more good for India than what Media has done!!!!!!

  4. Srini,

You are talking about rules and regulations. Shamelessly you have spamming my blog comments section and shoutbox from yesterday using different names!!!You better be proper before pointing at someone else!!

  5. srini says:

I wrote only about arrahman as
iraichal mannan and thakara dabba iraichal.

If you feel that only your favorite views
needs to be posted in this blog then even
you cant comment on me.This is a open
blog and any thing other than illegal or immoral writings can be posted here.

The irritating part is to find the messages
have been removed…you may say that you
dont care but it shows your superiority
complex which I want to break.

If you are throwing something for argument
in a open forum you should have the guts
to argue on that if someone asks about
something. Then there is no need for a
    argument blog at all…

You can have a jalra blog.

That shows your shamelessness and not mine.

I think you’ll block this also as I am not
sure whether you have the guts.

  6. Please read my posts on Kalpana Chwala, 33 % reservation, Arundhati Roy and many more posts. Even my posts on Schumi or Chelsea. Where many people have disagreed. And the comments still stay!! Irrespective of what I feel about it.

The reason I decided to delete your comment was you deliberately try to use my blog as a medium to let out your frustrations against ARR. See. I dont care who likes his music. I like it. It starts there and ends there. But if you keep trying to comment in every post of mine ridiculing ARR I will not keep quiet. And I have the right to do what I want? Who the hell are you to ask me?

And FYI who says this is an open blog?

I DECIDE WHAT IS TO BE THERE IN MY BLOG.

And it wont take long for me to ban you from entering my blog, leave alone commenting!

And you are going to break my superiority complex? How? By posting as jaya that you want to marry me and you love me eh?

Sorry dude. Am not gay. And FYI according to Indian law, this is immoral and illegal. So where does your argument go now?

    Go! Get a life!

  7. srini says:

    Look Gentleman,

I think you are suffering by teremyzophobia.

What I told about arrahman is simply my
thoughts.did I ask you take it? Pity on
you.I know if you are that much matures you
wouldnt have been a fan of that aravekkadu.

    Thats quite understandable.

But the problem as I told clearly is for the
names of different personalities others have
told different stuffs.so do I.why do you
want to delete it? if you dont care why did
you care for my message. This shows you
    are double minded.

Also I am not that jaya whom you are talking
    about.

  8. nagilan says:

ferrari.. you have written about people like Ram running from police…

When karunanidhi was arrested he was sent to the same cell in which jayalalitha was kept when she was in jail. When he protested that its the women’s wing.. he was promptly told that it was changed the previous week as a men’s wing. :)

Jayalaitha knows that the case wont stand in the court. All she wanted to do is to take revenge by keeping him in the same cell.

Ditto in Ram’s case.. if he had went ahead and faced police.. the main aim to put him in the police lockup and show who is the boss would had been achieved… also the next day’s papers would have had the pic in the frontpage.. the case would be eventually defeated and forgetten.. but what about the damage to his image?

  9. Nagilan,

In what way Hindu Ram’s image is superior than the image of other indians?

The Hindu has the right to damage other peoples image. But no one can damage their image eh?

  10. nagilan says:

    hehe ferrari!

i know how u feel about Ram and hindu..

no the issue is not about Ram.. the intention of jayalalitha is to humiliate him by using her power arbitrarily… he didnt fall for it and what he did is like tit for tat

also.. If hindu are left leaning and do damage other people’s image, then they are self-destructing themselves.. their monopoly will fade away soon

  11. IBH says:

look as Indians we are bit biased towards national dailies and the vernacular ones….vernacular ones sell like hotcakes…

but the point here am trying to make is, this sort of journalism will grow in this country and that we have to take it with a pinch of salt and move on! coz it will make no sense to create hullabaloo for one incident that will die down next month and another incident would be reported in a more sleazy way!

  12. Cacaphonix says:

    Ferro,

the last thing I wanted to do here is to do some serious posting…i cannot resist doing that this time :)

first of all kushboo’s thing does not come under fundamental right of speech (but technically yes it comes). She is a public, known personality so she should be cautious in her “Statements”. But in this count I dont blame kushboo. Imagine in a hotel bar when you are kind of boozed and you are tinsel world actor and some one asks you “what do you think of pre-marital sex?” You would naturally say “Nothing wrong”. Because you are in tinsel world and that is how it is in the tinsel world, so it is “perfectly normal”. So under that circumstances she is correct. But the media (dinamalar or whomesoever gossip monger) did a foul play and political parties who were waiting for a moment to score against her clinched the opportunity (I even doubt the hands of new ‘thamizh policing’ bluff-parties in such a provoking interview and twisted publishing).

  13. nagilan,
    :-)

    IBH,
Agreed. We should take with a pinch of salt. But we are forced to eat a mountain of salt. Thats my anguish. It is not just this incident that provoked me to write this post!

    Cacaphonix,
Nachunu nadaswaratha eduthu nadu mandaila adicha madhiri sonneenga. Jooper. Me Likey :-D

  14. Cacaphonix says:

Reason why that kushboo’s case cannot be argued under fundamental right is because we then inherently accept that kushboo has mentioned this as a statement for public and not as an answer to a question asking about her opinion (meaning keeping her and likes of her from tinsel world in mind, and answering). If we are carried away by this shrewed, yet another twist by media then kushboo will be hanged on moral grounds.

As far as media is concern, they think they are above law. They can write anything about Laloo, Jaya, Karuna, BJP, Cong, Commies and politicians mis-doings. But when it comes to a case against them they don’t go for a trial and prove their “innocence”. Brahmaastram called “Freedom of press” a paramount thing (in their opinion) will be invoked.

FYI, in India there is nothing specially called as “freedom of press” enshrined in constitution. This jalliadippu (to borrow from sujata) is done by the press people. It is only freedom of speec is mentioned and these press people have only that much freedom as you and I have to express, period.

Personally I consider corruption of media as equal and sometimes worse than corruption in public life. Remember no further word about those “as many as 10 media houses were under payroll of KGB” allegiation is being silently killed and only CPI is being trialed in media/public (even by politicians like BJP) as though only CPI was the culprit.

  15. Kumari says:

    My kaal ana :)

I do agree for all the moral policing thrust upon us by the media, they better be answerable.

But i don’t understand the ruckus around Khushboo’s statement. What is wrong in asking people to be safe and not sorry? This whole ‘Indian morals’ issue is skewed if you ask me. Just because ppl we know don’t do it doesn’t mean pre-marital sex doesn’t exist in a world outside tinsel town. It does…in colleges and many places we wouldn’t want to think it exists. And rather than close our eyes to it and talk of purity , i think the least we can do is ask them to be safe from AIDS and the likes.

I know i sound stupid for all the moral science classes i attended in my life. But then thats my point of view. No offence intended.

As for the media, it is no longer about issues that matter but more about ‘matter’ issues. This freedom of speech is accepted when the person speaks something you wanna hear and not otherwise.
OKay, now i am completely lost. This is what happens when u get agitated :)

Media in India feeds the minds…the empty lives that can be filled with scandals and stories..so as long as that void exists, this high handedness will also exist.

Btw, i am sure i am wrong in many places and do please go ahead and help me change my perspective if that is the case :)

  16. Ganesh says:

Prabu I am glad you have brought this topic.
This is like punaikku yaar manikattaradhu kathaya irukku
Indian media thrive on sensational news the real journalism died longtime back, now its big corporates that runs the news so whatever it takes to sell they will publish

  17. KK says:

ALL SAID AND DONE,BLOGGERS PLEASE SEND YOUR VIEWS/COMMENTS/PROTEST CONDEMNATIONS TO EDITOR-DINAMALAR
    coordinator@dinamalar.com
    nrireaders@dinamalar.com

THEY BETTER BE FLOODED WITH EMAILS AND LET THEM KNOW POKING INTO SOMEONE’S PRIVACY IS NOT TOLERATED..

    KK

  18. Raman says:

This is interesting – that our Press is turning ‘sensational’ is a fact – even Hindu has fallen a victim to this – at one time even confirmed news will come out late!
When there is no news of regional or national importance, the media looks for the trivial happenings and blow it up.

And incidentally I find English is taking a beating in this blog!!

  19. rsubras says:

ferrari……… post another blog………and let us start with new set of comments…. ithu already over crowded ah irukku…

actually i wanted you to write on yesterday’s strike..athukku than i entered this comments section… atheppadi ivanga oru govt ah support pannuvangalam…. antha govt policy ah ethirthu strike panni nation’s financial position ah cripple pannuvangalam..if they are realy serious about what they are asking why dont they pull out from the govt and then do whatever they want instead of crippling day to day life and affect ppl…. i found this as bullshit attitude…… very cheap politics just to retain / return power in elections…

  20. nithya says:

I am reminded of my history/civics teacher’s golden words… Rights and duties are 2 sides of the same coin blah blah and blah… That poor term “duty” has no meaning at all in this world, more so wrt the media… I think the media should act in a more responsible manner… And I do agree on an authority, something like a censor board for the media…

Most of the sensationalizing is coz of the political backing each magazine/paper gets… they jus echo the dumb ideas of the politicians that support them… its exactly like the sun-tv jaya-tv drama on a larger scale… If the media function as an independent entity, with full freedom and all crap, yet with an authority like censor board above them, things will be better i think… and this censor board should be apolitical, something like the supreme court…

Then comes the million dollar question of who will form the censor board… and obviously, our political bigheads will influence that, and eventually it results in the same stuff… vicious circle this!

Tabloids like TOI, which featured the famous kareena kapoor kissing episode continuously for 1 week on page-1 should be banned from going to the public… or atleast they should be termed porn magazines and not “national” dailies! Not a single newspaper (national/regional), magazine or TV channel exists, that doesn’t sensationalize its news…

And to hell with the Indian morals and culture and all such crap! The whole idea of what constitutes culture and what doesnt is terribly skewed… and it gets worse by the day, thanks to the all pervading media… Media/Politicians telling everyone things right from how to brush ur teeth to what to wear and what to talk and what to eat/drink isnt definitely culture!

  21. Jacky says:

Media is to be blamed for resorting to yellow journalism. The flip side is if people said NO to such magazines and news channels, these sleazebags would resort to ethical journalism.
Don’t watch NDTV, avoid Kumudam Reporter, Junior Vikatan, TOI and all such papers and magazines.
Thanakku prachanai varatha varaikum any kinda sensationalism is adored by the public and the papers are just exploiting such tendencies. Intha attitude marina pathirikaiyum marum.
Athu varaikum journalists will crash into everyone’s private lives to make their living.

  22. Chenthil says:

Disagree with you Ferrari. In this case we are talking about Right to Freedom, then the samething applies to Media too. You can do whatever you want within law, and Media can write whatever it wants to. If we feel it is intrusion into privacy or it is slander, then we should be able to sue the Media. In India it is possible to sue the media and get them to apologise, only it takes time.

When we are angry about loss of privacy of individuals and write so much about this issue, then it is not correct for us to ask for curbs on media. Blogs too are media. And as we know lot of crap is written in blogs, why some times we ourselves write crap. How would you feel if there is a censor on blogs?

  23. Chenthil,

Presently the media thinks themselves as some superpower. And they dont need to report to anyone or worry about what people think. Most ridiculous attitude.

And once media reports a thing damage is already done. What can an apology written in micro mini font size in some 7th or 8th page do to repair the damage caused?

True about blogs. If censorship is there, I dont mind! I should be responsible and accountable for what I write and publish!
